just to chip in, On my first two tanks after getting my 7M to run right this month . . . I averaged 18mpg.

Ohh yea, thats with 300hp, and 35inch tires, and plenty of heavy foot b/c the boost (8-10psi) is so much fun

and its still running very rich . . .

I could see 20 MPG

Good luck, poor bastards. Back to your regularly scheduled topic

Id hate to say it but RIGHT foot has alot to do with it.

Also - check the Vf tune to see how far off the ECU thinks things are.
Confirm 02 sensor functionaly and check TPS via FSM procedure..

I get 19/21 with 22RE motor, 31" tires, 4.56 gears.
Have since day one (original owner) and 355K worth of gas logs

If you didn't correct for the speedo / odo offset, the odo was showing that you traveled 10% farther between fill-ups than you actually traveled. Now that you are closer to an accurate tire size relative to your speedo / odo calibration, you are seeing a truer mileage figure. Some other things to consider: Bigger tires are heavier. Not only heavier, but more rotating weight that has to be spun up and slowed down every time you accelerate or decelerate. Carrying weight (of any kind) costs mileage. Automatic transmission vehicles are generally less fuel efficient than manual transmission vehicles.

I have a 92 3.0 w/ auto tranny that has 182,000 miles on the clock. I run 31's but the speedo was calibrated for 28's, so I correct for miles traveled by increasing the trip mileage figure by 10% after every fill-up to get a more accurate mileage figure. Recently my mileage was pretty bad around town. I was getting about 11 mpg , even with the mileage correction. I had been running some Bosch +4 plugs in it. The plugs work great in my 2002 Solara and in my daughter's 99 model Camry ( both 4-bangers ). But for some reason,, the 3.0 in my 4Runner doesn't like Bosch. So i changed back to some regular NGK plugs and cleaned the throttle body thoroughly. With no other changes, my around town mileage improved to about 13.5 mpg. The next day, I left on a 1300 mile trip. Best mileage on the highway was 20.25,,, worst was 17.89. I also found that fuel with 10% ethanol in it gets worse mileage. It was worse by ( you guessed it ) 10%, compared to the previous tank of 'normal' fuel. So be alert at what type of fuel you are running. That could cause poor mileage. Also be sure to have your tires inflated properly. I try to keep my 31's at 35 lbs.

Looks like you are on the right track with the mods you mention. Keep us posted as you go.

Mike in AR

WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!! Its the exact opposite!! lol! with larger tires, your milage would be 10% lower, NOT higher. For a full explanation, read this....

Clicky:
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t195831.html

and since the tranny is where the pick up for the speedometer is, that would equal less turns on the speedo. doing the calculations, 31's will allow your vehicle to register only approx 93% of the miles traveled. I know, i fight this all the time in my truck... Stupid 31's.

ive got a 93' 4runner with the 3.0 which is all stock, on an average tank of gas I will drive probably 65% highway, 25% city, and 10% wheeling. I do take it easy on the acceleration to get better mileage. Lately I have been getting 18-19 MPG so about 300 miles before fill-up. I was planning on putting on a Borla Exhuast to try and get a few more MPG's. BUT IS IT TRUE THAT 3.0's GET BETTER MILEAGE RUNNING AT HIGHER RPM's??? That sounds kinda crazy whats the deal?

92 Automatic 3.0 4runner, same MPG issues

Hey everyone, first post.
I have a 92 4Runner with the 3.slow also. Automatic, don't know the gear ratio yet. Same issues with mileage. I've done the ISR mod, just changed cap, rotor, wires, plugs, (Going to try the NGK Iridiums also) fuel filter, O2 sensor also. EGR is one thing that can rob mileage, I'm going to have mine checked by a Toyota guy to make sure it's working correctly.
Just my two cents, I'm digging the information you all share here. Helps me out to no end to figure out this rig since I've been a Germany car fan forever but not many Toyotas.
Keep posting progress, want to know which direction to go to next. I'm thinking the manual hubs would be a good choice. I'm in Portland, Oregon, anyone know of a good 4 x 4 shop around this town to buy hubs and other parts at? Any good mechanics would be greatly appreciated too.

Welcome to Yotatech!

Well, nothing like a good resurrection....

Read up on manual hub conversions. It seems that not everyone agrees swapping will bring you better mileage. Same for the iridiums. Seems they just last a lot longer thereby saving you a little in the long run.

And if you care to save a little more moulah, read on EGR bypassing. Not saying do it, but many of the threads explain how to check the valve for operation yourself. It's really very simple. Would take you a few minutes and you'd have more money for other things.

Eventually, you might read about and consider a y-pipe mod and higher flow exhaust. Those are valuable things with these motors.

Lastly, you might even think about regearing at some point. I say that because I'm planning on it for my wife's '92 rnr. It came stock with 4.88's, but I believe going a bit lower would be an advantage in many ways. But, first determine what gears you do have. On the inside of the driver's door there will be an axle code you can cross reference with this:

Oh, and a tranny cooler!

Hey guys, tomorrow I embark on a 6-hour drive in my Runner. It will be the first time to drive it....out of town lol. I run 31-10.5's and the speedo in corrected to them. I have the 3.0 and an auto tranny. When I cruise at 65 mph I am running at 2750 rpm. When at 70 mph I'm on 3000 rpm. First off, does this sound right? Secondly, what speed would be a good idea for gas mileage? Thanks. BTW, right now I'm getting 13.8 mpg in town, but I just adjusted the timing and lost my intake silencer. Hopefully that helps.

3k at 70 sounds right for me too. I'm betting at 70 you'll get 19 MPH.

general gas milage
test 02 sensor (will tell rich/lean)
test air flow meter
test tps
test egr flow
check for binding in steering
U-joints
check disengment of hubs
dragging brakes
synthetic fluids
compression test followed by cylinder leak test if needed
correct gearing for tire size
check spark advance
check for back pressure in exhaust
alignment will make a big difference
tire pressure
turbos always help too but not to cost effective
many times loss in fuel economy is not related to engine performance problems, dragging components are much more likley.
hope it helps

Nice mod.

I don't really understand the deckplate mod. Does someone have a link? I can't find it with the search feature.

Thanks
