My 87 4runner is leaking like a sieve
I'm just numb. I bought my 87 4runner, 22R-E less than a month ago and today it just died. I was told that it was rebuilt about 30,000 km ago (it's got a total of about 350,000 km).
My rpm's would sometimes stay high during idle due to a gummed up springloaded part that moves the butterfly in the TB. If I depressed the accelerator quickly and then released, it would bring the idle back down. To unstick the springloaded mechanism, I sprayed the springloaded part down with WD-40 and proceeded to scrub it with an old tooth brush while the engine was running.
Every now and then, the head of the toothbrush got snagged and the engine rev'd really high. I didn't think anything of it. For some reason, it stall out after a couple of minutes of spraying and scrubbing the spring loaded part. I thought that maybe some of the WD-40 got sucked into the TB and may have somehow flooded the engine.
I was just about ready to give up when it finally started after 10 minutes of cranking. Then this loud clanking noise came out of nowhere, and an oily substance was being slung around by the drive belts. I thought it was just excess WD-40
. I decided to drive the runner to my parent's place where I stored my 88 pickup that I just put up for sale.
Anyway, to make a long story even longer, it wasn't WD-40, rather it was oil. I lost about a liter of it after about 30 minutes of driving. The engine bay has oil all over the place. I noticed that it didn't make that awful clanking noise and seemed to run smoothly, but I don't know where it's leaking, since oil was everywhere.
Like I said, I'm still numb.

Don't know as I haven't done it before. Anyway, I don't want to spend time on it now until the weather warms up and it's drier. It'll have to stay in the garage for now. I've also decided that there are more important things in life, like my family, than spending most of my spare time repairing my trucks. Since I've got another vehicle, I'll just take my time with the runner.

doesnt sound to me like it got a "real" rebuild anytime recently. I just redid my motor the right way and it cost $2500 including parts and labor but i tore down the motor myself. You can subtract about $500 from that b/c i got forged pistons and you wouldnt need that.
Some pictures for your viewing pleasure, hope everything turns out well in the end.

Anyway, thanks for the link to your thread. It's inspiring knowing what others can do to their trucks. I'll do a search for a thread(s) that contains a 22R-E rebuild and see what lies in store for me. If anyone else knows of a good rebuild thread, please let me know.
Thanks for the support.

I was expecting to see a big puddle of oil under the engine today. Before I left it yesterday, I topped off the oil. I didn't notice any oil dripping today!? I didn't start it though. Now, I'm wondering if it could be leaking from somewhere higher up, perhaps the cam seals, front main seal or valve cover gasket? Anyway, it'll have to wait.

Keep us posted.

Keep us posted.

Hmmm.... that's a great idea using foot powder! Thanks.
