I am considering buying an msd box for my 87 22r 4x4. i have read some people cant live without the msd box on a carbed truck and other people think they are a waste of money. Who is running them and are they worth it? I could get one for a sweet deal so im curious to know if its worth it

 

What tires and gears are you running?

 

Im running a msd blaster coil, i can tell a little bit of a difference but not that much. its not really worth the money in my OP.

I ran one on my 91 just 'cause I had it sitting around... didn't notice a bit of difference... but the shiny chrome sticked looked nice when you wiped it off

 

I'm running a Summit box, believe it is made by Mallory. No, it did not make my 22re into a race motor. I could probably play with the spark plug gap more but haven't. I've got several mods to engine so really hard to say how much in would improve by itself.

I've seen them fail, so I set mine up so it can be bypass it with easy. That is why I have not widened spark plug gap any more.

 

31 in bfg muds and stock 4.10 gears. why does this matter with igntion system??

 

What size tires came stock?
28's or 29's?

Heavy BFG's and a larger then stock size can decrease performance from rolling resistance and weight.

If your looking for power out of a 23 year old engine that makes 105HP at the flywheel from the factory.. your smoking something.

You'd probably be better off gearing it than polishing a turd. 4.56's would be a nice combo.

Just my 2 cents.

 

4.56 would be a much better solution. 4.56 gears made quite a bit of difference in acceleration and the engine doesn't mind the extra revs. The 22R/RE motor is what it is, a very reliable, fuel efficient motor with a relatively decent torque curve. It isn't and never will be a powerful motor, but then again its a p/u, not a race car.

 

im not necessarily looking for race motor status with this msd box. i was looking for better fuel mileage and better starting. ive had problems with fllooding my truck so i was hoping that a more complete, hotter spark would help this situation.

 

My experience is your not going to get what your wanting to get out of an ignition box. Your better off getting a hotter coil pack. Just not worth the money.

 

Waste of money IMO. Tried one but noticed nothing so I sold it.
