i love my 2.7L that engine gots some power for being a 4 cylinder, it doesnt like hills too much but it will still go from 85mph to 65 and 4th gear up a 5% grade.

I don't know if the performance add ons will be that satisfying in terms of dollars to performance. I know I may take some heat on that, but if it's running well, I'd look other places. There isn't a ton of power to be found by cam and header type mods (although I have done them and will use my LCE on every RE I'll ever own!).

Gearing seems to be where it's at, so either the 4.88s or losing the 31s would be your best bet. I've kept my street trucks (all with 4.11 or 4.30s) at 30 inches or less and won't go higher. If I want to go fast, I have other vehicles for that.

I am actually looking at going to 33's here after the long travel is put on. I understand what you are saying though. My truck is daily driven and used to hual hay, horses, trailers, dirt bikes and anything else needed to be done around the farm, so going to a street tire is next to impossible where i live and the needs i have. (some may disagree) but living in southwest new mexico i like to play in the sand every now and then or go crawl one of the many trails. I have spent some time today looking into different brands on the gear sets and just need to choose one and order a set.

i'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this already, but is your MPG calculations taking your tire size into consideration? 28" tire is stock, so if you're running a 31" tire on 4.10 gears, then you should be off by roughly 10% and you need to remember this when you are calculating MPGs, determining what speed you're actually doing, and determining what your odometer should actually be. it's also part of the reason why you can't keep up the speed on the hills.

that is very true and unconsidered on my part. I know that if the speedometer says im doing 30 im actually doing 35. Im not really even concerned about the mpg like this post seems to have led people to belive. I was actually just trying to inquire if people had the same problem climbing up inclined grades and what they did to resolve it or if they just dealt with it. It isnt my daily driver, thats what the motorcycle is for. Im actually building it into a baja truck.

You wanted more power without minimal impact on economy; that's why it sounded like you were concerned about it.

4x4 22REs are not known for being gutsy. Neither are the 3.0s, for that matter. What you experienced is typical for the truck you have. The 22RE has limited potential for increasing the power without forced induction. An engine swap may look expensive and laborious, but I really think it would have a better return on investment. The 2RZ-FE/3RZ-FE and 5VZ-FE are all better, more powerful engines. You should be able to get better economy with a 5VZ than you do now and have 75 more horsepower and 80 more pound-feet and unlike the 3VZ-E, it will handle supercharging very well. There's another 50+hp and 75+ lb/ft.

thank you for the input.. all things are being considered. i hope with what i have been posting isnt making mesound rude, just seemed like all replys were more geared towards the mpg side rather than the performance side. As a drag racer I know mpg and performance do not get along. this truck is fixing to undergo a fiberglass fender/hood/bedside baja kit, suspension work, a exo cage, and some sort of performance addition and or motor swap. that is more of the information i am looking for. parts/sites to use for these upgrades as i am new to both toyota's and the off road world. i searched this site under the word baja with no luck on anyone who has done this

One thing you have to consider with the 5vz swap is you will have to take care of the tranny because the bell housings are different. I have an OM617 in mine and push 30mpg on the highway. It isn't a hotrod, but it will do whatever I want to do and pull any hill I have found in 5th on the highway. They make full kits to adapt one in for the 22re for about $1000 Just a thought.

Well if you're looking for parts more baja oriented parts check out fiberwerx for glass. For front end check out JD Fab or Total Chaos they also make stuff for the rear of truck as well, and another good company for spring kits is giant motor sports. But you can also get springs from a lot of other places like Alcan, Allpro, Deaver, National spring, any spring can be made to work well with the proper shock and shackle placement stay away from this / \ with the shocks thats not rock crawler that's just incorrect. Unless you wanna link the rear thats a whole different ball game, but with a 3 link towing gets a lot harder. That is just a start there is a lot of information out there if you're looking to turn your Toyota into a pre-runner. Just google and you will look at stuff for days.

@PSJ, thanks I will look into that swap a little more. @Beeler I have already contacted fiberwerx and havent decided on the front end yet, and thanks for the info on shock mounting. This truck must still be able to tow, so I am looking into building a custom rear bumper as I use it to hual hay, horses, and motorcycles (dirt and street). I am using this truck as my "shop" truck and as a weekend toy. so it isnt my daily driver but still want it to look nice and be able to tow and play in the sand. I think I am gonna start a new post and see if it doesnt attract anyone more to the baja side of this
