My Toyota isn't getting the greatest mpg. It has a V6. Last time I checked I was getting 13. I am running 31" mud terrain tires, which are pretty bald. It is also an auto transmission. Anything I could do to boost my fuel mileage?

 

Have you compensated for the larger tires? If it didn't come factory with 31's of course.

 

I have a 94 and changing my o2 sensor helped tremendously!

 

Get into the habit of writing down your mileage (and fill-up amount) each time you get gas. Then you can actually know. 13 isn't great, but I get about 15 with stop-and-go city driving, up to 20 on the hwy. You're moving a lot of metal with a 22 year-old engine.

The speed you drive has a big impact. If you wind it out to 75 every time you can, 13mpg is about the best you'll do. Slow down (RJR calls it "grampa driving"), and you'll save a lot of gas. Not for everyone, but it does work.

 

Yes ^ I use the app MPG tracker on my phone to record all my fill ups. Only down side it only does one vehicle

 

Alright thanks. I've replaced the fuel filter, air filter and spark plugs. Did seem to help much. I'm hoping changing when I change to smaller tires that will help. Replacing the O2 sensor is next on my list. Thanks!

 

Are you calculating for the larger tires?

 

Air pressure in the tires for mileage you want higher then normal.

Put your vehicle on a diet The more plunder you haul around the lower the fuel mileage.

Breaking up with my 350 pound girl friend with her 50 pond purse. Gained me almost a full mpg in mileage .

Watch the rpm but with a auto it is kinda hard .

 

I'll bet not towing around her 200 pound 10 year old helped a bunch too

 

It would have been her 10 year old grand daughter!!

Stop and go city driving I get 13 regularly w/ the AC on.
Around 14.5 without AC.

For fuel MPGs, the best thing from what others have done on these boards that you can do is a good catback like LC Engineering sells. Next to do on my mod list.

Also ensuring you're running a sealed cold air intake -- check out/search for my air deflector mod -- helps with power significantly as well.

Next, there's a maintenance section in the FSM that walks you through how to check all the sensors. Do that!

Fluids -- sythethics make a difference. Engine oil, tranny oil, transfer oil, and diff oil. Ensure you drivetrain is well greased too.

Lastly, check out my amsoil upper intake cleaning and also the amsoil engine cleaner and fuel injector cleaning. Definitely helped to smooth out my engine. And once all that crud is removed, replace your O2 sensor.

Other options/upgrades -- Flamethrower orange/tan injectors and crossover delete.
