15mpg city/highway thats turning 35X14.50's with 4.88 gears... so not too bad for a 9" lifted truck with huge tires and a tiny engine....

wow, so lucky
I had the engine rebuilt at 20k ago, and I only get about 12 still. Runnin an auto, a few mods. These polls are always interesting, and every time they come up, I want to go kick my runner.

Wow, I get 16-18 a tank depending. And I haven't even put wires and plugs in yet.

I can't help but notice a few of the low milers are California Control Vehicles.

I just can't see how this is possible.
I've had two 3VZEs now, over 300,000mi combined and neither would get 20mpg, not even downhill, with a tailwind, drafting a semi.

My current POS w/ 4.88s and 305/60/18s (about a 32.5x12 street tire) gets about 12mpg, that's interstate too, it's worse around town.

I'd sure like to know what your trick is.

Help!!

holy s***. im getting a whopping 12-13 mpg both highway and City. And I never even go over 70, I probably get 11 mpg if I go over 70. Do you think I need a tune up even if its not idling rough. I mean the idle is glass smooth right around 600 rpm. Distributor cap does look kind of old(its a Denso, which I think is factory). I'm running everything stock except for a grille guard. my mom's landcruiser gets better mpg than my 4runner. She's even thinking about selling it and getting me a camry or something. I would die if she forced me to drive in that. what do you guys think.

I think you are lucky to have a mom that cares... lol.

Otoh, spend some time searching. If your idle were 500rpm, I'd say that is the classic symptom of a TPS problem. There is a ton of info on this site.

I did my first mileage check since swapping out rims/tirers, plugs, cap, rotor, and plugging EGR vacuum line. I drove approx 90-100 miles on pavement going no faster than 65, mostly 60ish on cruise. I also had 60-70 miles on hard packed sand doing 40mph on cruise. I have manual hubs, auto tranny and stock 4.56 gears. my tires are 265/65/17's (same as a 32 incher). I got 15.75MPG. That was with a surfboard on top too.

Get bigger tires.
I was getting the same with my 31's and 4:88's, I put 33X12.5's on and I am at 16.5 mpg (Auto trans. also). I did the math based on a 140 mile round trip and filling up not based on the tripometer (tire size effects that along with gearing)

could your gear ratio have a significant play on this? I mean by a couple of miles?

With 35s and 4.10s I get like 10mpg.. LOL.

When I put the stocker road tires back on (actually a tab bigger than stock) and go on long trips I get like 20-22mpg on the highway. Not bad. Remember this is with an SAS too so alot of added drag there, if it was stock height my MPG would be even better.

I will add that when I picked my truck up in Dallas and drove the 500 miles home like this, I got 20-21MPG. And I was driving 70-80mph. Have never gotten that since...

I run a steady 16-18mpg with every fill up on my truck. I'm running 33x10.50s with a custom cat-back exhaust, Cootees ISR mod, and K&N filter.
