I get 13-14mpg. Doesn't matter if it's city or highway. Manual trans, 36x12.50's, 5.29's.

During my last trek to Moab, I used a GPS to track my mileage and gas consumption.

3.4L V6 w/Auto
Keeping it about 60mph
with a Roof rack full of junk
4Runner loaded with stuff, 3 dogs and wife I'm weighing in at about 5900 pounds.
I'm running 37x12.5x15 Goodyear MT/r at about 32psi
4.88 gears and a Full Floater out back.
Of couse my 4Runner is a brick in the air.....so aerodynamics is a out of the question.....

with all of this, no kidding, I got 20 MPG.

The terrain was relatively flat. I was able to keep the 4th gear in the cruise position. With the Automatics, I have noticed that there is a 4th cruise and a 4th high position, just before it jumps to 3rd gear.

I was pretty impressed.

I've got an newer 04, and I get between 18-20 mpg, I was talking to Tyson (TYOTA)over the weekend up in Utah, and he said he gets north of 22 or 23 mpg pretty consistently on his '97 Runner. Wish I could get that...

The past 2 tanks 70 hwy/30 city - 19.4 MPG and 30 hwy/70 city 18.5 MPG. Just put in a new OEM air filter about 4000 km's ago and new plugs about 6000 km's ago.

I'm happy.

I get 14-15 but I'm running 33" BFG MTs with stock 4.56 gearing. Not too bad for that set up.

3vze gas mileage

I want to calculate my 3vze gas mileage, but first, how many gallons does the stock 2nd gen hold anyway? I never really emptied it fully and filled...and don't have an owner's manual (if you have a .pdf would be great)
thanks and I will have my results up soon

About 12-14mpg. Auto tranny running on 32x11.50 tires, and geared with 4.88 ratio. It sucks. I epitomize the phrase "4 cyl power with V8 gas mileage."

Seems like the auto trannys combined w/ bigger tires steel the mileage. W/ my auto and 31's, i've noticed that once you get over 70mph mpg really starts going down.
So if the gas light comes on 2gals before it's out, do most of you guys just keep going for 25miles or so?

"4 cyl power with V8 gas mileage."---so true...

I get 17-18 on 31's but I have a manual. I have no idea how well it's in tune since I just bought it a few months ago and it's running smooth but there might be some room for improvment... ohh and the 4cyl power w/ 8cyl gas mileage sucks... the 4runner is a home run in most other categories....

Better mileage

This poll is closed. I started it to get feedback as I was getting 12mpg at the time I opened the poll.

Clearly 16 is a reasonable expectation, based on the poll.

I have gone from 12 when I first got my '94 4runner, to 15mpg as of this last week.

If I didn't drive with lights on (always), and I didn't have the 8 miles of dirt roads everytime I leave home, I would be now be getting 17mpg.. All things considered, ok with me, at this point.

You may remember I bought the vehicle back in May. All I've done is fix the TPS, a switch on two of the egr vacuum lines, and reset the idle. At that point the truck ran well, did really well on emission testing here in California, but was still running 12mpg.

What has been happening since then is the idle has been turned down about 3 times... idle would creep up from 800-1100 over a week or two, I'd turn it down using the TB air adjust. At the same time, the mileage kept improving now probably normal for the driving I do.

I think I may be seeing the benefit (as I've said in another post), of the oil I use, and the gas I use. Probably Seafoam would have done the same thing, but this I've noticed before. The oil tends to clean, and keep clean everything it touches (Rotella T), and the Chevron is cleaning the injectors.

As I mentioned in another post, this has been my experience on all my vehicles going back 21 years, roughly. Several engines (the RX-7, and the honda generator) showed dramatic improvements. Anyway, thought I'd update this thread. I'd be voting 15 today, big change from 12..... will let you know if it continues to climb.
