mpg on 3slow

i got better mileage when i chaged out my spark plugs. wires are on the way. i used to get 13.5 now im getting about 14.7. yeah, dont expect more than 16 if you got a 3.0 its a great engine, just doesnt get good mileage.
filled up the honda we bought, 26 dollars to fill her up. :]
the 4runner its 54 to fill it up.
as you can see, thats a huge difference.

If I am lucky I get 16 city. Thats with a fresh tune up with synthetic oils. I recently took a road trip 700 mi each way and my best mpg was 22.5 hwy.
My exhaust helped (my old muffler was in bad shape) and manual hubs help a lot too. The best thing IMO is keeping your tire pressure at spec.

bout the same
I get:
10mpg driving all local below 25mph and lots of stopping
16-17mpg mostly freeway
13.6mpg mixed (more local than freeway) over the last 17k mi.
Switching to road tires this week in the same size. Will see if there is any difference (may be negated by the rotational weight of a fully treaded new tire...then again greater tire dia will mean less rolling and drivetrain resistance...ha ha).

I average about 13-14 mpg. I have a rack with lights and some other mods that add weight. Your not alone.
I'm planning on building a straight air tube to elimnate the silencer tube and install a MSD box soon. I'll post if those help mileage.

I get around 15-17 mpg in mixed city/highway driving and 18-20 on my trips back home. The mileage of the 3.0 never really bothered me since before I got my 4Runner I was only getting about 12 mpg in my Dakota.

K&N's typically don't help fuel economy much, at least not by themselves. Air has to get in AND out. BTW, often any added performance is matched by added right foot with negates fuel economy increases of the mods.
Keep your engine in proper tune.
Free up the exhaust. I got a 1.5mpg improvement going to a good cat-back system and new cat. I would like to correct the poorly routed stock crossover pipe but have not had time to look into it and don't know how much it will help.
Make sure you don't have any vacuum leaks.
Advance timing. (there's a good post on it so I'd say search)
Air up tires a tad on the hard side.
Again, our trucks will hurt on the freeway because they have terrible aerodynamic qualities. Slam it and put a smooth plastic under belly pan and you will probably see the freeway economy improve. (Heck, a smooth under belly pan would help right now) Remove every unnecessary part to bring down the 4000lb mass and you'll see an improvement around town.
Or, put up with 4X4 fuel mileage and stop blaming the engine. Heck a stock Explorer of similar year will get the same fuel economy in 2wd trim so what are you complaining about?

I know my situation is a little different because I have a truck but I get about 18 around town and about 19-20 on the highway (5-speed). I have a small lift and run 31s. I think the 13-16 mpg you 4Runner guys get with the same 3.0 V6 is about right. Aerodynamics and weight (plus tires and gears if you have mod'd it) really make a difference.

im wondering about that big oil pot we found in the gulf coast. supposively miles and miles down. they are working on that, and its OUR oil. so lets see if when they get that done if we get our gas prices back down to a dollar! imagine filling up for 20 bucks. that would be the life...
