Motor noise

I not too long bought this 86 xtra cab 22r, and when I first crank it up after its set all night it has a loud ticking noise but it only lasts for about 2 to 3 seconds and then it straightens out. I'm thinking it may need an oil pump. I do know it needs a little valve adjustment because it has a slight tick to it when its idle. But that trucks runs great other than that. just wanted to see what somebody else thinks or may have had experience with so I know what I need to do and don't throw away money fixing something that doesn't need fixed.

Red face

Put a manual gauge on and check oil pressure.

Just a guess but I would venture it is taking sometime to get oil up to the valve cover.

some oil filters drain making it worse.

This is just a guess

Noises can be hard to figure out on the internet

While a New Oil pump can`t hurt it may not fix your problem.

Just how many miles ??

I would venture your taking notice because this is still new to you

I got the gauge hooked up not long after I got it, it's been ticking since before I got it but it doesn't affect anything other than making that noise when it first crank it. I got a oil filter on that is supposed to keep oil from flowing back through. The dash says 278xxx but the guy I bought it from says it was rebuilt by the guy he bought it from.. yea quite a lot of owners.. and the the guy I bought it from had a new head put in and only about 1500 miles on it and new timing chain cover but I can't tell if the oil pump was changed. So I figured it wouldn't hurt to get a new one and just see what that might do. But i just don't like the ticking when it gets cranked. It doesn't do it if you crank it again after you let it run, so that's what's got me thinking it could be the oil pump having to get the oil back up. Just guessing

Most of the time a factory Toyota oil filter will fix this problem. I had one that did this with every oil filter I tried. I finely put a Toyota factory filter on it and bam dry start up gone.

Factory filter cost no more than the ones you buy at part store. Two filters was 9.54 at my local dealer.

I just changed the oil in it last weekend and put an stp extra mileage or whatever it's called on it that is supposed to keep oil from flowing back through. But I'll see if I can get a Toyota filter and see if that fixes it
