header and air intake results

I added the header and cold air intake from Downey and went up from 15.7 to 17.2 mpg. I don't have access to a dyno, so mpg was a good way for me to get a measurement of increased performance.

The cat-back is next and I'm hoping for similar gains. Someone said that 2.5" tubing is too large a diameter for a 4cyl (apparently low rpm power loss due to loss of back pressure) and that 2.25" is better. Can anyone confirm this? All the cat-back systems I've found online are 2.5", though.

Yota82 -- you recommended higher octane gas and advancing the timing -- how many degrees? I'd like to try this.

For basic and cheap power I have had the best results with a header, 2.25" full exhaust, intake, 8*-10* BTDC on the ignition timing, 89 octane, 2 clicks rich on AFM.

A little friendly advice: watch what you say about removing the cat on this site. The thread will either get locked of you will get banned. Chips are a waste of money. You essentially do the same thing as a chip when you remove the thermostat from your vehicle.

I'm not saying to remove the thermostat. I'm just saying that the computer thinks the same thing when the thermostat is removed as it it does with those so called "performance chips". The only difference is with a chip the engine could be at normal operating temperature. For the money they are charging it is definantly not worth it.

Its like the man said " Speed costs how fast do ya wanna go? " To get a lota power out of your 22 you gotta make it scream then you loose your bottom end torque. If your cat is starting to plug that will sure eat all kindsa power and make it run hot. Go back with a higher flowing cat when you redo the exhaust. Remember you have to have some back pressure or you wont run any better than you started with. Most likely worse.

That's not entirely true.
Leaving the thermostat out will decrease the engine temperature.
Lower engine temperature will mean that you'll be running a richer mixture.
A richer mixture, contrary to what most people think, will not result in more power.
I'd hope that the JET chip would impact timing also, but who knows - I've never seen a dyno run with one.

Search - there are lots of bolt on ways to get more power out of a 22RE.

most performance chips are nothing but bull☺☺☺☺. Better off spending your money on other means of performance.

engine swap. $500 will get a sbc. $3000 can make tons of power.

a cold air is a waste of $$. I learned that the hard way. just do a custom ISR and deckplate!

Actually, I'd recommend a cold air intake on the 22RE. The intake temps measured in stock form are 120-125 degrees at 75 degrees ambient temperature... You could get a big temp drop with a decent cold air intake.

If you read the thread mentioned here, you sill find the information about the stock manifold, and 2 inch pipe, then 2.25 cat back.

Then I would read this:

And please, keep your cat on, yes, some of us think it is just plain selfish for people to poison the air because they think it helps them drive a little faster. Is their a race? Are you winning a trophy?

I heard that you can swap out the injectors from the newer 2.7 motors and they flow a lot better. Anyone ever heard of that?

Will the injectors flow better? Sure.
Will your truck run better with alternate injectors? no..

I think a Lce header, exhaust, get rid of the cat conv. and definetly a cam. and re gear are some of the best mods
