Does anyone know if I can install a mechanical Water temp gauge in my Runner with a 22re turbo? Specifically, where and how can I attach the sensor?

too bad that's not a 22re

I had one installed on my non-turbo 22re, but it wasn't ideal

it tapped into the thermostat housing directly after the thermostat

it worked, sure, but it didn't register until the truck warmed up and the thermostat opened up

I think the housing that has the bung is on the early 22re's, like 86 and 87. the bung had to be enlarged a little and retapped to take the threaded adapter for the gauge probe








I ended up removing the setup though, just because of how unreliable it was. if the thermostat were to ever just stick closed and the truck started overheating, I would have had no early warning (aside form the OEM gauge in the cluster, but those are far from reliable as well )

 

Hey Superbleeder - where did you end up putting your secondary temp gauge? I currently have one in the t-stat housing like you've shown. Granted, I put it there so I could see exactly when my e-fan was coming on and monitor operating temp. It hadn't occurred to me that it wouldn't help in a t-stat failure!
