Manual Transmission Oil for 22RE

Toyota Pick-Up 22-RE 1995 4x4 128K miles

In the Owner's Manual says to use:

GL-4 SAE 75W-90

Where I live the only one they sell is Castrol EP 80w Manual (GL-4)

Is it safe to use SAE 80W instead of SAE 75W-90 ???? is there a big difference?

Unless it ever gets cold there, I don't see any real problem. Run a search on Redline MT-90, though. That's really good stuff. Butter for the tranny and ftw.

You know, Amsoil is good stuff and I've used that in the past. It's just harder to acquire. I've also used M1, but I tell you my tranny feels much better with the MT-90 than it ever did with the M1. Not that it was all that bad, but it felt stickier and a little harder to shift under certain conditions. It was full synth GL 4/5 rated.

Maybe not the question you asked, but it doesn't hurt to make suggestions, does it? Get whatever you can get, for sure, if it's to your most comfortable convenience and budget.

Wow. Fortunately you don't have to change the tranny oil that often...haha.

I have a 1994 Toyota 4×4 short box pickup with a 5 speed Manual transmission. I live in Edmonton Alberta so temperatures vary from -30 C in winter & +30 C in summer. Looking to see what everyone would recommend for Manual transmission oil. I have a friend that claims this is the best. Any thoughts ?

Napa can order you Royal Purple or Redline MT90. I like the MT90 for my w56.

Answering your specific questions, the short of it and the long of it: Yes. No, not where you live.

All my older manual transmissions get MT90 these days, but Redline GL-5 75W90 in the transfer case.

If it’s “yellow metal safe”. You’ll be fine. Seems most gear oils at parts store aren’t in my experience. Will shave life of your tranny.
