Manual hubs not turning all the way to Lock

My friend had his front brakes done on his '88 Pickup. He had them put new rotors on, so obviously they had to remove the manual locking hubs.

Anyway he got it back and we went to go drive out onto the beach yesterday, and as we were airing down I turned the pass. side hub to Lock and it wouldn't go all the way to the Lock position, it stops before the arrow lines up in the Lock position. The arrows line up perfect in the Free position, but won't go to Lock.

So I yell over to him to try the driver side hub and he said it wouldn't go into Lock. I went over and it was doing the same thing, lined up in Free but would not line up in Lock, stopped before it.

So he threw a fit for a minute while I played with them, and they seemed to feel like they were engaging, or locking, to me. So we put it in 4WD and headed down the path onto the beach, which usually has some deep sand in the beginning, I figured if the hubs weren't locked we'd know it right away in this sand.

We hit the deep sand and the truck pulled right through it no problem, so the hubs were locked and 4WD was working fine. We made it all the way down the beach all day and back no problem.

He is gonna take it back to the guy who did it, but basically my question is, what did the guy do to both sides when putting the hub back in to make them both not turn to Lock? All he had to do was take the hub out whole and then bolt it back in, it's not like he had to take the whole hub apart. And also how were they locking if they weren't being fully turned into the Lock position?

Thanks.

they have been put in backwards, very easy to do, also very easy to fix. I took mine to a brake place they did the same thing. just ensure the springs are set the right way (pay close attention to the 2 notches at either side of the hub itself) it can only go in 2 different ways...good luck

PM me if u need further info

Backwards? Huh, I didn't even know they could go back together backwards, guess i got lucky when I did them on my '92.

So even being in backwards they would still lock? They seemed to work fine on the beach still.

he didnt put them in correctly..
the notches on the inside have to match up correctly or you won't be able to get it all the way turned...

Yeah, I had to pull mine, and sure enough turned them essientially 180* and it would line up to the locked pos, and before it would go roughly 2/3 the way to lock.

That's exactly what they are doing, they stop about 2/3 of the way to Lock. Ok I will let him know. At least it's an easy fix.

the hubs on my 91 were rebuilt wrong by the previous owner when I got it, and it was doing the same thing

it actually made the hub stay locked in when in the free position too, and ended up destroying a CV boot

Ahh OK, so I guess his hubs could just be stuck locked and that's why 4WD worked.

yep, but all you need to do to fix it is pull the hub cover and dial off, and reinstall it right

Cool. Thanks guys. I gotta search around for a breakout of the hub, it's been a while since I've done one.

pull the hubs off and look at them for a minute to see how they work. it's pretty intuitive and you should be able to see how they should be assembled and place them back on correctly.

If you want to check that they are locked/unlocked, reach around and grab the CV and see if you can turn it or not.

Lol..
Just grab a 10MM socket and pull the hub face off..
You'll be able to see how it works from that point.
These hubs are ridiculously simple to build.
I rebuilt mine without even seeing the manual lol

Yes super easy. Only the face needs to come off and reinstalled in the correct position. You don't need a book and you don't even need to jack up the truck .

Well he pulled the face off and then called me and said there was a spring stuck on something that was holding the face on, and eventually he moved it around enough that the spring popped off and the face came off. That's when he called me up, but I'm at work and can't get over there tonight.

I remember when I had mine apart that it was more than just the cover that came off when removing the cover, i think I remember the clutch part of the it coming out with the cover.

Anybody know what spring he could be talking about that fell off the cover and if this sounds like the cover came off incorrectly?

i'm guessing that it's the big spring that came off - this would be the one that pushes the hub gear onto the spindle. just look at the diagrams of how it goes back together and you'll be fine.

i just had the same thing happening with my passenger side hub. replaced the wheel bearings and found out it wouldn't engage at the beginning of a trail - it would rotate about halfway and then stop. took just a few minutes to take it apart and put it back together the correct way.

theres a spring between the mounting flange and the drive gear..... when installing hubs make sure that the "dial" is in the free position and the drive gear is back the whole way against the mounting flange with the spring compressed. I bet he put it in with the drive gear out and it in the free position and is BS'ing u. I've done it before but caught myself before I drove it anywhere.

Just noticed this same issue with my 94. I too got my front brakes done about 3 months ago and haven't had the need to lock in the 4 wheel, but I was tinkering around today and figured I'd turn the hubs and engage the 4 whell for a tool around the back 40 when I noticed on the drivers side I couldn't spin from free to locked, passenger side is OK.

For someone like myself who is severely mechanically un-inclined would one of you kind sirs lay it down for me in the dumbest possible manner. I want to spin it about as mentioned but knowing me I will muck it up.

Many thanks in advance!

When I bought my truck the guy told me the driver side hub was hard to disengage so he always beat it with a wrench and hammer. When I got around to taking it apart it was put together completely wrong. The spring was just free floating in there. My passenger side was the same way. From previous posts looks like that's how my cv boots got destroyed.
