major coolant leak

im concerned too but not sure how to get antifreeze into the sys with it this far torn down any ideas?

Well with the heater core you could pull a heater hose and with a funnel stuck into the hose just pour it in. If the t-stat is removed you could keep pouring until the antifreeze runs out the t-stat hole.

yea ive got a heater hose pulled im just gonna mess with it tom the low tonight is in the 40's, gotta love procrastination!

well got everything pulled apart and replaced and put back together (or so I hope!) now it wont start, charged the battery it turns a handfull of times kind of rough and then stops i hear a sort of compression noise like air building up everytime it turns but it never turns over! any ideas?

My guess is your distributer is 180 off. TDC can be on the compression or exhaust stroke... or at least that happened to me.

Try setting the engine back to TDC and see where the distributor is. If things line up, go to TDC one more time... then install the distributor and see what happens.

the timing belt came off during the removal i tried to place it the exact same postition, but i never took the distributor off.

how do i check/set TDC?

<edit> NM found it on FSM pull timing belt cover and throw a socket on the cam pulley..

Your motor should have been at TDC before the belt came off. If not, it's possible your crankshaft and camshafts are no longer lined up correctly.

The FSM will guide you through, but basically all the marks (1 on each pulley) need to be pointed at 12:00. Then you turn the motor at least twice, making sure they still are in line.

How come the "easiest" jobs always seem to get so hard?

This is an old thread, but I'm gonna post to it anyway, because it could be useful to someone. I would almost bet anything that it is the plenum gasket that is leaking. There is a water port at the rear and one at the front. I pulled my plenum because of the exact same leak you spoke of, leaking on top of bell housing and running down drivers side. when I pulled the plenum, it was obvious that the leak was coming from this gasket, both sides right side at the front, left side at the rear. Don't do what I did. I did not come to this conclusion until after I had already done the right side head gasket. Oh well. LOTS of extra work for nothing.
