I bet you spun a rod bearing. Pull the oil pan off and see if it's full of metal chunks.

wouldn't I have to pull the motor out to pull the pan off or is there an easier way?

Use the search feature. I just posted today how to pull the pan on 2WD automatics, and there was a pointer to another thread about 4WD manuals.

Howdy from Austin

Before you buy anything, figure out what the problem is first. Sounds like annoyingrob could be right about it being the bottom end.

I'd actually start with a compression test to find out which cylinder's got the problem. If you can do a leakdown test, that would tell you if you're looking at a problem with the block or cylinder head without having to open anything up.

If you think it's the block, then pop off the oil pan. It took me 3 hours in the rain this morning to do it on my 2WD automatic. It would be faster in the dry garage, but slower on a 4x4. Should be easy for you if you've done the water pump.

Take pics and post them here, and you'll get lots of expert advice.

1st gen sure sounds interesting, but I'm still scraping together the cash, and then have to convince the wife the toy is really a worthy investment. Heh! Longview, aren't y'all famous for balloons?

can you do a compression check w/o having to take it to a shop? and what is a leakdown test?

Taking the pan off while the motor's in the truck is pretty straight forward. Drain the oil, un-do the motor mount bolts, raise the motor up until the transmission is up against the transmission tunnel (you can do this with an engine hoist, or just with a floor jack) Remove all of the oil pan bolts, and pry it off with a screwdriver to break the seal. I also had to remove the driver's lower transmission brace.

Buy a compression gauge to do a compression test, they're not too much money, or buy a leakdown gauge. I think I spent 85 bucks on mine, but you'll need an air compressor for a leakdown test.
