looking for a lil clarification wheel bearing torque...
I had to change caliper and rotor on my 95 4unner 4x4. When pulled all apart I inspected wheel bearings/races all looked good. I repacked and put back together and took it for a ride. All seemed well until I was making a left turn, there was some noise and shuddering. I figured maybe need to check the torque again and re seat bearings. I have it apart right now. 1st nut followed the torque procedure found on this site. I also checked my haynes. my spring gauge reads about 15 on the first nut after torqueing/spinning/loosening/spinning/etc... my lock washer installed (doesn't seem to lock). 2nd nut torqued to spec what should spring guage read? book says '6.4-12.6 lbs greater than oil seal drag'.
its a 4x4 auto hub bottom pic is of worn out lock washer. Will try to get another one tomorrow.

Well that lock washer, you need to bend a tab up some so the first spindle nut doesn't come loose, and your said 15ft-lbs? I tightened mine a little more, 21 I think but here a good link. . . http://toyota.off-road.com/trucks-4x...ent-18322.html

I set mine to 20. Are you measuring drag on the whole assembly and not torqueing the nut... In other words you're just turning the nut till you get 15lbs resistance on the hub?
I personally just set the inner nut to 20.. I first set it to 40 and do the spin spin loosen spin tighten spin etc.. To get rid of any grease hydraulics. Then torque it to 20. Washer, outer nut I put on pretty tight, before it starts trying to move the inner any.
Done dozens of assemblies and hundreds of thousands of miles..
Your shuttering could be from different sources.

I set the torque after the spin sequence to 18 ft-lbs. the spring gauge shiwed over 15lbs. i am torque-ing the nuts not just relying in the apring gauge. i had no shuddering prior to brake job. I did bend rhe tabs of the lock washer but the locking tab is worn bad and wont keep it in place

well it seems like it is all good now. replaced the star washer with a new one. None of my local stores had one. A friend happened to have an extra brand new one, I put it on drove around and no noises or shuttering
