Looking for 3.0 Intake results
Hey I have a 91 3.0 4runner. I've been considering getting a K&n intake but wanted to know what those who have it (or any brand) installed have to say. Is the power increase notable and worthwhile? And this is a long shot but have you noticed any of the claimed increase in gas mileage? Also I know most aftermarket filters are reuseable but with me wheeling over dust and dirt all the time should I stick with an air box?
Thanks
Thanks

dont waste your money on a k&n just cut up your stock air box and do the isr mod and put in a good drop in filter and you will be happy with it and should cost about 100 dollars or so

I have a K&N cone filter. I found that there was a niticable boost in off the line performance and an increase in fuel economy. Plus there was a cool [to me] jet sound from the intake. K&N instructions say that driving in dusty environments would require more frequent cleaning of the element as the only real limitation. This would be the case with a drop in air box K&N also.Hope this helped Aviator

nope there is a maf sensor plate that comes with the kit its really not worth what they cost is cheaper to cut up your stock air box............... yes it does eliminate the stock air box

Fuel and performance gains are marginal from the K&N FIPK, power in the range of 3-7 hp and fuel economy 1-2 mpg, and thats being extremely optimistic. The FIPK was one of the first modifications I did to my 3.0 and I don't remember being too thrilled with the results. The deep induction note and the audible hissing of the filter element upon startup is somewhat addicting though.
You can purchase a cone filter and a maf adapter plate for relatively cheap off ebay, couple that with the premade ISR pipe from www.toyboxfab.com and you'll have an intake system that meets or exceeds the performance levels of the K&N unit for around $120.

I have the FIPK and for me it helped a LOT when it was hot out outside. Normally the truck would have NO balls at all when the temp was above 90*F, before I popped my HG, it would actually get up and go in the heat after I put hte FIPK in. I also noticed an increase in top end power as well as a 1.5mpg gain on the highway...

You have got to be careful with the K&N oil it will destroy your MAF if reoiled too much. It is easy to do this. I did like the sound from my old K&N but power wise nothing really. Also If you plan on wheeling with it be very careful going through water, its very close to the front and it can suck water up in a heartbeat. Ever thought about a snorkle, it brings in cold air all the time being that its out of the engine bay. Im not sure if it gives you any more power, though I bet it will give you more than a intake.

The mod I did was just to remove the factory airbox and mount a custom adapter to the stock MAF [ any muffler shop can do it its just a piece of exhoust tube mounted to a plate and painted to prevent rust]. I did port the MAF to smooth out the airflow but its not necessary. I would not bother with the FIPK kit like crymson said just DIY and you'll have something better for a lot less cost. Aviator

Only 3rd gen and younger trucks have MAFs. The difference being a VAFM has a spring loaded vane to measure air volumes where as a MAF uses a heated element to determine air volume....

Its a toss up.
I also did the ISR mod but decided to keep the stock airbox, It flows way more air then what the AFM can allow anyways, I also didnt want all that noise from the engine compartment and the possibillity of getting water in the engine.
The throttle responds is a hair better but if you lay your foot into it in responds to the sound your fuel ecconomy will go out the door.
