Locker time!

Well, not yet, but they'll most likely be my next step a while down the road. 95 SR5 3.0 auto, want to consider all options, with emphasis on ease of install and then price.

looking for ease of install, get a complete 3rd with gears and all

looking for best price, weld it

lol, but seriously, I would look into a LockRite; that's what I'll be going with, along with some 4.88's

Not easy....or cheap, but here's my write up for an electric locker retrofit for another option to Detroit, ARB, Lockrite, etc... that not everyone takes into account when deciding on a locker...

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-build-183550/

You may read or hear about an Aussie locker, but those are not available for the v6's IIRC...

I'll read up on the LockRites. I was lucky enough to get a Runner with the 4.88s stock.

Go with the Lockrite and be sure to do a write up for the rest of the forum.

Then go wheeling!

Not so lucky if you want to go to 33"s over the stock 31"s. How much you wanting to spend? Aussie and Lockrite and EZ locker were designed by same guy but different generations and companies. Aussie is the newest, I got one but haven't run it yet. Got a lockrite I've been running for a while in the rear. Quirky till I learned to drive it. Got a used ARB with compressor haven't run it either yet, dang deployment always getting in the way. If you get something used send it to someone like ZUK to do a check up worth every penny. Three of my 3rds are posted on his web site.

Just decide what you want to spend research the right way to do it. And remember the reason that people who don't have much money should pay to have the right stuff done right is cause you can't afford to do it twice.

I've already got 33"s on the way. Not sure how much I'm wanting to spend, $500 range maybe.

I was just checking out the Detroit rear lockers at AOR, how easy are they to install, and how do they do on road?

Did some more reading, and have a few more questions.

Aussie lockers look like a good deal, read up on 'em, why are they not availible for the rear on a '95? I see the fronts are there, and I assume starting with those would be a big step up from having none at all, right? How is the install on the fronts, about the same as the rears?

The differentials on V6-equipped trucks and 4Runners is a little different than on 4 cyl trucks.

Automatics lend themselves well to automatic lockers, so a Lockright would be a very good choice.

So, looks like maybe an Aussie up front and LockRight in back? Are the LockRights ok for a DD like the Aussies?

Its personal taste whether or not they work for DDs- best advice would be to find someone with one and try it out.

i am running F/R aussies on my '81. I would not recommend a locker up front unless it was selectable like an E-locker or ARB for a DD that might see 4WD use during the winter. Locked Front ends have some interesting driving characteristics

I've already got some manual hubs on the way to hopefully save a little wear and tear on my CVs, so wouldn't that pretty much make a front locker pretty much invisible with the hubs free?

(still new at all this and learning as I go... so if I make moronic assumptions, just smack me and tell me why LOL)

yes it would, but if you need to use 4WD during the winter the locked front end tends to pull straight--not wanting to turn. I lost my rear drive shaft a few months ago. Pulled over, finished taking it out, locked the hubs and drove home just using the front end..it was a work out to make turns

Gotcha. I guess my search for a rear locker continues then, and the E-lockers and air lockers are a bit rich for my blood at this point, I really wish the Aussies were availible for the V6 autos.

What about Detroits? ~$500 is towards the upper end of what I'd like to pay, but my options seem to be somewhat limited. How is the install? Are they too much for a DD?

I realize that some of that is subjective, but it seems everyone in my area is too busy lifting and breaking F150s and Ram 1500s, with the usual Jeep fanbois thrown in, no one runs the Toyotas it seems, so it's near impossible to find an example in person.

Here is the cheapest place I have found for gears/lockers and such.

http://completeoffroad.com/

Just a suggestion, but maybe source/regear a 4cyl rear to give you more options for lockers!(you don't loose much if any strength)
Just my $0.02
Larry

Not really, all you need to do is reset the backlash- which is pretty straightforward.
