Lock Cylinder Jamming? This fix might work.

Are you unable to turn your exterior door locks Clockwise? (Unlocking the driver's door, locking the passenger door.) If you only have the problem in the clockwise direction, it may not be a bad key (or bad lock cylinder). It might just be the return spring that wraps around the lock cylinder. As it gets a slight amount of corrosion, it will bind up as it tightens and jam. A drop of oil cured it for me, but first you have to get to it!

The photos below are from a 1994 SR5 (with electric locks and windows). I understand that door interiors vary widely by model.

1. Remove two phillips-head screws in inner door handle (under caps). DO NOT try to remove the door handle; it's attached to the inner skin.
2. Lift front of panel with switches, then lift and slide forward to disconnect.

3. Disconnect three plugs (door locks, windows, marker light).
4. Remove phillips head screw inside inner door latch handle. Slide handle FORWARD until it snaps. Carefully open plastic clip on rod and remove from handle.

5. Remove two phillips-head plastic clips from inner door skin. You may have to pull out as you unscrew.

6. Remove one center-post clip. Press the center post IN and pull clip out

(when you reinstall, you will pull the center post out before pushing clip in.)

7. Pull eleven plastic clips out of metal door frame to release inner door skin. Remember; the skin is the Japanese equivalent of Masonite, so it has limited strength. This is a good place to use a real Trim tool.

8. Lift the inner door skin to release from top (window edge) or door frame.
9. The inside of the door is sealed with sheet plastic and very sticky black stuff. Soften the black stuff with a hair dryer (or heat gun). Be careful; the sheet plastic will melt at about 190 degrees F. Peel enough plastic away to access the locking mechanism.

10. Remove the round plastic cap to access the aft 8mm screw holding the outer door handle. Open and release two rod-clips (door latch mechanism, and lock mechanism). Try not to break them, but if you do they are available on eBay for about $9 for 10. Do not drop into door; they are not magnetic.

11. Remove two bolts holding outer handle. Pry the handle up and pull out from bottom.
12. Clean up everything (including the excess wax around the edge of the outer door handle). Add one drop of oil to spring coiling around lock cylinder. Try to keep any oil out of lock itself. Try with key to see if there is enough improvement.

13. Reverse procedure to reinstall. Use heat gun to soften sticky stuff so you can neatly adhere plastic sheet.
