a lil help please? running issues....

95 runner sr5 3.0 auto with about 130,xxx on the clock.

Problem. Runs crappy in the rain. Will not go above 1800 rpms. Runs fabulous in dry weather.

Solutions attempted already -- new distr cap, new rotor, plugs and wires changed. Ignitor and coil changed. New air filter, (actually put a 'cold air' intake on it.) filter is dry. Found a few open wires 1 on the distr plug 2 at the coil/ignitor. Fixed all problems found. No open vacuum lines.

Today was the first time it rained since I fixed the newest found broken wire. It held out through about 20 mins of a good heavy rain then it started, and continued for about 45 mins til i got home. I pulled off the side of the road while it was happening and it looked like everything was dry.

This weekend I will be scouring every wire and connection from the fuse box under the dash out to under the hood. I will also re-check all vacuum lines. My question is this

Can anyone give me a few spots to pinpoint to maybe get this issue fixed?

thanks (apologies for the long post but i didnt want to leave anything out)

Since you've worked through the obvious stuff, you might consider getting a spray bottle of water to see if you can duplicate the issue in your driveway. If you can, get a timing light on it to see what's happening. I don't have much to go on, but it sounds like the timing might not be advancing correctly once "something" gets wet, and the most likely something is the distributor or the ignitor.

A lot of those problems (e.g, loss if IGT signal) should store a code. So before you do anything else plug in your SST and see if you have any stored codes.

I have a Nissan Frontier (can I say that on this forum) and acted similar, turned out to be a broken negative cable lug at the block.

okay so i pulled the throttle body and gave it a thorough cleaning, about a 1/4 inch of gunk. I pulled most of the wiring apart that is under the tb and repaired any breaks and re-taped it all. I took off the tps and checked for debris or anything and it looked clean. All back together now. Idle is right at 1000 rpm. I cannot turn the tps down any. Gonna wait for the next rainy day and see what happens.

The other wiring seems to be ok.

Use the hose in your driveway and see if you can make it do it.

okay not to bump an old thread, but I just wanted to mention that I MAY have found the cure to the problem.

A leak into the interior via antenna hole missing a grommet. Turns out this missing grommet lets the water run almost in a direct path to the computer in the pass kick panel. I checked the carpet it was wet, I pulled the plastic off and the lower corner of computer was rusty, with a line of rust leading down from the antenna hole. I have made the fix. Replaced grommet(s) opened computer sprayed down with electrical contact cleaner, re-sealed computer box. Put dielectric grease in all the plugs into computer and re-assembled everything. Will update post again after a good rain to see if this fixes it..
