Lack of Power on Acceleration

Lack of Power on Acceleration
Hi all. First off, let me say that this forum is great. I have gleaned much knowledge from its pages.
My truck (1994 Pickup Auto Trans 4X4 22RE) has this problem. When running in the Park position, it is fine. If I step on the brake and shift into drive, I get a small 'puf puf puf..' sound coming from under the hood, sounds like toward the center area of the engine compartment. Also, I have unexpectedly low acceleration power from a take off, e.g. stoplight or stop sign. It takes too long to get up to speed, up until it gets to about 25 MPH, then it starts to accelerate somewhat normally.
I have checked the plugs/wires/cap/rotor, all are good. Haven't done the timing yet, but plan to.
Also, there is an adjustment screw (kinda looks like a hex-head slotted screw) on the engine-side of the intake manifold. My buddy was messing with that one day while the truck was running at park, and the engine didn't change when he fiddled with it, so he left it alone. Thing is, I don't think he left it in the original position, and maybe that is affecting the truck not while in park, but while moving.
I am being told that there may be a vacuum leak under there somewhere, but I haven't the slightest idea how to begin hunting for that.
Can anyone help?

welcome. as for that, could be many things. vaccuum leak, valve cover gasket leak (though i doubt thats causing EVERYTHING), but im leaning more towards a exhaust manifold leak. they are prone to cracking. BTW, nice tat, my homeboy in san diego has the exact one in the same place.

Cool, thanks for the reply. BTW, can you shed any light on that adjustment screw I mentioned? I looked again, and it comes right off the air intake chamber, on the engine side. Black hex head, slotted, with a spring underneath the head. I am sure he left it in a different setting than it was originally.
