Get a stethoscope and pinpoint the source of the knocking when not under load?

well, i put new plugs wires rotor and cap on it a week ago or so.... some of the old plugs had a noticeable amount of oil on them.... i've pulled the valve cover off... two of the rocker arms seem to be contacting the pan on the underside of the valve cover...

but, its just too loud to only be that...

Any more info?

Mileage, condition of oil.

My buddy just bought a truck with a super bad rod knock, but then again its got a bad head gasket and tons of water in the oil

Me thinks you had the valve cover way too tight. The nuts only need to be tightened down to a few lbs of torque......or, just until the rubber washers start to squish, really.

BTW, that can make a lot of racket!

Start over with some fresh washers and VC gasket. Tighten them down as suggested. But, really........you need to pinpoint the location/source of the noise. A long screwdriver will do the trick in lieu of a stethoscope.

Oh, that "pan" is the baffle. Keeps oil from splashing up into the PCV and breather line.

And, hopefully you didn't warp the valve cover?

Oil's black?!!! You should probably consider changing it, then. Any idea how long it's been in there?

Sorry to hear you're laid off. Seems to be happening a lot.

Well, when you do get around to "scattering" it, make sure that noise isn't coming from the front of the motor.....ie. the timing chain cover.

Lots of things can make loud noises. Probably the most serious is the bottom end knock which is caused by either rod or main bearings. I would not expect this noise to go away when you step on it.

Another thing which can make a lot of noise is the timing chain flopping around in the front banging away on the timing cover. This would be worst if the driver's side timing chain guide had broken. Did you look at that when you had the valve cover off? I think it might be possible for this noise to lessen with load, assuming that you would tighten up the chain a little.[edit: oh, I see that you have checked this]

As for your rockers hitting the valve cover, that doesn't seem like a good thing to me Particularly considering you had oil fouled plugs. Was there a correlation between the oily plugs and the rockers that are hitting the cover?

Sounds to me like you may need a valve job, maybe rings, maybe timing set and front cover.

As mentioned above, get a 'scope and find out where the noise is coming from in order to get a better diagnosis.

It could be serious. If the noise is the chain hitting the cover, you can get water in your oil which can result in lubrication failure and then you'll need to rebuild the bottom end even if it's not already toast.

I take it you're familiar with what you're doing, then?

Did you look down into the chain assembly?

And, suddenly there was no one............

Okay, with the age of the motor, most likely (as was already suggested) valve job. Valve seals are probably leaking and/or oil rings. I'm willing to bet you seriously need a valve adjustment, too. And, I'm willing to bet that's alot of what you're hearing.
