On my 86 Toyota 4x4 2.4 5 speed..turn the key and only a click from under the glove box.Headlights,radio etc all on.My friend popped the clutch in first as I pushed and it turned over.Parked on a slight hill at the house and shut it off expecting it would'nt start again,but it did first turn of the key.What's up?

 

starter solenoid going out prolly, had it happen b4...its hit or miss till it finally goes out then nothin..i dont remember if you can get it seperate or if its integrated

Could be the ignition switch in the steering column, the solenoid at the starter, the starter itself, a bad ground, a worn wire....

I had the same issue in my 89 and after replacing the starter (mistake) and a alternator, some wires and the ignition switch I did the smart thing and installed a "hot shot" kit from Summit. These things tend to wear out over time and I had an intermittent *click* no-start issue for months. Once I installed the kit I've never had an issue again.

Save yourself time, money, headache and possibly being stranded and install a "hot shot" kit. Trust me on this one.

 

im guessing its the starter solenoid... same exact thing happened to mine... i hated that clicking sound in the morning running super late to school haha. just remove the starter and take it to kragen or somewhere that will test it

I also think its the starter relay, but check the battery terminals and grounds to inner fender and engine block (from battery) for corrosion before you remove any parts. Its easy to do, free, and will cause an intermittent start condition if enough corrosion exists.

 

I have the same problem, but it does start every morning.

 

Yep, remove your battery terminals and clean them good.

 

Hate it when that clicking noise comes up from under the dash. Always turns up like that after I install an engine. Tends to be that I overlooked the wire connections at the distributor or ignition coil.

If you're really depserate you can install a bypass jumper circuit. I got one hooked up to a switch in the cab, just incase something happens. It's a good way to test if your starter works without taking it out. Just make sure no one knows about it & that you don't leave it on after the engine starts.

Any switch will do along w/12gauge wire. There are two connections for the starter. One is a big one that has a nut & the other is a single wire w/a connector that slides on & off. If you crimp a standard female connector on the end of your wire, it should slide right in place of the other one(be carefull not to touch the wire elsewhere!).

 

check the white wire that goes from your battery to your fuse box on the fender.may be loose or corroded.

 

check ALL your connetions, then triple check.

Had a buddy call me a few months back with a similar issue.

Cant count how many times I told him to check his connections.

After a month he paid a mechanic to look at it and it was the positive wire to the starter was loose.

 

My bet is that the starter terminals are corroded or the solenoid is bad. But really there's no for sure way to tell until you start testing and replacing things. It's also not a bad idea to check battery and starter connections, especially since its free to do so.
