Key gets stuck in ignition when wire is plug in

I tried posting a picture, but I couldn't resize it. But anyways the other day I was messing around with my 4runner and found a wire unpluged under the console shift houseing. The connection has the rectangular shape plug with brown and green wires. I plugged it back in and started the vehicle up. Didn't notice a difference, so i shut it off, but then I couldn't pull the key out. So then I unpluged the connection, then the key came right out. So do any of ya'll have an idea of what wire this is, and what is the prupose of it?

without it plugged in, if you have your transmission in gear can you still pull the key out?

You have a problem in the shift-lock control switch circuit.

You are not supposed to be able to turn the key to lock (and therefore can't pull it out) if the automatic transmission is not in park. The other "half" of the circuit prevents you from taking the transmission out of park unless your foot is on the brake. (There is a mechanical override for that on the shifter plate.)

Here's the circuit diagram: http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...i/shiftloc.pdf The plug you reference is probably K2. Note that the diagram calls out Blue-Red and White-Black for the wires, so there may be some difference between your vehicle and this particular diagram.
