Heres my email traffic with EB about the pistons --

"Hey guys,
I got to putting my new head gaskets on the block and realized that I
put the pistons on the wrong side. I put the "L" pistons on the
passenger side of the motor. I realize that this will not work(thank
god i caught it) and was just wondering what the difference in the 2
sides was? The best I can think of is that it has something to do with
the dish on top of the piston.... cuz they are all round

Katie

********************************

The wrist pin offset is directional also, it is important they be correct.
Ted

********************************

Thanks for the response - is it vital for the rods to go back in the same location upon reassembly?

********************************

We do prefer it, there are always tiny plus/minus "sets" that rods will take in use, but typically it isn't critical. If the rods have been resized or the crank reground then it doesn't matter of course.
Ted "

I also got some presents from the big brown truck::

I am planning to go dis/ass my motor tomorrow after work

So i have 5/6 of my short block re-rebuilt. When I went to put the first piston in I snapped the compression ring in 3 pieces - Not sure why or how.

I used that new KD ring compressor that Gary(TNRabbit) and I picked up and to be honest, I am quite unhappy with it. It may have been due to the slippery lube all over everything but is that not the environment that it is intended to be used in? It took me 3 or 4 tries to get each piston in because it kept slipping off the rings at the last moment. GRRR the 6 dollar tube thing worked better for me.

So I need to call Ted tomorrow and get another ring(pack of ringS) sent out.

Sorry to hear, Kat. I found the ring compressor to work PERFECT. Shot the piston right in no drama every time.....

I am still here - Just working on settling back in to the house. I am waiting on my rings to come in from EB again. I am working on the stereo stuff though. I ran my 0 gauge down the passenger side through the ECM grommet and along the frame under the edge of the carpet (it fit nicely) and I ran 2 runs of RCA's, remote wire and speaker cables down the driver side . I have the crossovers under the seats(I put a little slit in the carpet). You cant see any wire or anything the way it is now. I did get my midranges mounted in the dash good and solid with some dynamat in there to help out a bit.

I am currently working on ideas for the sub/amp in the cargo area. I cant decide between making something with plexi windows and a neon or going "stealth" - but you cant hide a 26x13,3 amp and a 10" sub that is 9 inches tall very well....

Bumpin' I am waiting for my tweet brackets to come in before I send them to you.

Gary - Im still here, I have to beat you getting this motor back in?! Hope yoru arguing with the machinist went well today.

And this is for all the NAY-SAYERS who say you can't put the motor in with both headers (yes BOTH fully bolted down!) and a tranny attached!

She is in - motor mounts lined up first time and they are all bolted as well as the tranny x-member. it took 12 minutes from when we rolled the motor up to the engine bay to have the motor mounts and tranny bolted. I cheated by using 3 people too.

so would you consider this a "level" 4runner?

My cam timing knock down pins are missing - not sure if the machinist took em out(i doubt it) or if Johnny's cam grinder took em out(probably that one) -- anyhow not a huge deal - where would be the best/fastest place to get new ones? I assume you tap em in with a hammer?

Kat

PS - IM HAPPY ITS IN!

you are correct - i put them on to hold the belt in place -- I am missing the cam knock down pin(it holds the two top pulleys on the cams in place) I will not be able to finish the timing belt until I get them.... But I can put the fuel injectors and delivery pipes and electrical things on.... Wire up that 0 gauge to my alt and starter...

Not a lot of progress but here is some pics for you guys/gals...

Heres some 0/1 gauge for the starter

Heres where I relocated the speedo cable and whatever the other one that sits next to it. I moved them over top of the tranny(still warm, but far less than exhaust heat)

Heres a far out shot of the headers and where they drop

This is the only thing I couldnt easily relocate for the headers: (its only fuel lines)

These last 2 are pictures of what I am going to work on tomorrow - I have not yet searched where they go for the igniter wires. and as far as the hoses I need to order the missing ones once i figure out which ones are missing.

Enjoy y'all

Please, please, just advise, not trying to bash...

This is the only thing I couldnt easily relocate for the headers: (its only fuel lines)
First: Fuel+heat=bad combo. Vapor lock being the least of them. At least build a shield.
**Aren't those your brake lines to the side of it all??

Second: (Well header related too) Dimple the body and put in some heat shielding, that heat will transmit right up through the dash area, and start to cook stuff eventually.

**Factory was some sort of fiberglass and foil bit if I rememebr correctly??

That said, nice exhaust!!

Katie, The ignitor wires are all correct, The wires shown are ground wires, small one bolts to the wheel well and larger one goes to the block or head under the distributor.
