I just bought a 1987 Toyota 4Runner with a 22RE and a five speed transmission. I have two concerns about it. I flew to Phoenix to pick it up, from Southern California, and drove it home. Most of the way I couldn't get it to go over 60 miles per hour. It has 31s on it, which may be some of the problem. Midway home I put some fuel system cleaner in and refilled the tank. That didn't help. It is still pretty gutless. Perhaps a tune-up is in order or is it possibly the stock diff gearing that is to blame?

The other concern is actually a problem. I got home with the 4Runner; however, not too far away from home I started to hear a noise, which at the time I thought was the throw-out bearing. It now appears to be a bearing in the transmission that is bad. What transmissions are interchangeable with the 4Runner? For instance, does a five-speed from a certain range of years of Toyota truck switch out or do I need the tranny specifically for the 4Runner? This is the first one I've had and I could really use the help. I've had EBs (Early Broncos), shamefully a Bronco II and a Suzuki Sidekick and want to build this 4Runner up. Right now I just need to worry about getting it on the road though.

22RE is not super powerful to begin with..

31's with 4.10s isnt helping

It should be a W56 trans

I never get more than 100K - 150K out of the 5th gear

 

I have a '92 V6 4runner w/ an auto tranny, when I did the swap over to a 5 speed tranny, I use a 1989 toyota pickup 4x4 V6 5 speed tranny so np on any year, but it must be the same tranny from your model. Your is a 22RE so I believe they use W56 5 speed tranny so you need to look for a good W56 tranny in any year that is available for the W56 tranny. Hope this help u a bit if not then there other member that will help you out cause they been there...

 

It should be able to do about 70.... did you have a head wind? A good wind can be enough to keep you around 65. Most trans will fit in it, but if you use a G-series, you'll need to notch the floor a little.

 

W56 from 85-95 trucks and 4Runners with 22RE should work..any used ones out there are more than likely gonna need a rebuild. Check your fluid levels, even change it.
