"What the hell is that noise?" Threads.

1994 4Runner 3.0


When i have the steering wheel turned to the far left and go over any (even minor) bumps i hear a creaking - clicking (More creak than click) noise from the front driver's side wheel well.

- Happens only when the steering wheel is turned as far left as it can go, or close to it. If i lessen the sharpness of the turn, i wont hear the noise won't show up.
- Doesn't happen when the turned to the right.
- Noise comes from drivers side front wheel well.

Example: I'll be doing a U-turn (nice and slow, few MPH) wherever, lets say a parking lot, and if i cut the wheel as sharp left as possible and hit even the slightest bump the loud noise will begin and keep going for the duration of the turn until i begin to straighten out.

In the off chance this sounds familiar to anyone I'd love to hear about it!

 

Sounds to me like the noise that all older yotas make, including my 1994 4Runner. I think I heard somewhere that it is caused by a little metal bumpstop that makes contact with the rest of your front end componants.

 

Well, check your steering stops..though thats not the exact noise commonly described, its a good easy and cheap place to start.

the plastic cap on the steering stop has worn out or fell off its not a big deal ether replace the cap or live with it nothing to worry about

 

That's what I was thinking of. The name for it just didn't come to me...

It sounds like the steering stops to me too. Just dab some grease on the steering stop and the area that it contacts. Do it on both sides and add it whenever you start to hear the noise again.
