You sound like an evil genious....

I think a turbo on the 3.0 would be cheaper/easier to do, and you could intercool, also.

I would suggest first finding a MAF replacement for the VAFM. It is very restrictive.

I'll definately take that bet now that i have a 3.4 in my truck yours will still be hitting 10mph when im doing 40mph i cant believe how quick my truck launches now.

on a side note i drove a tacoma last night with a supercharger and DAMN makes my truck look slow. now that thing has low end power.

btw frank.. have you found a MAF replacement for yours?.. thats gonna be my next mod.. but i can't seem to find any info on the subject (other than.."man, i wish someone made a MAF kit") ..im thinking a used unit off a celica or supra might work ..do you know of any possible candidates?

LOL, i'd never supercharge an engine with 400,000+KM on it! (250,000+ miles) that is just begging for trouble.
The 3vze would be OKAY with tonnes of mods... but would it still be as relaible? I doubt it, thats why people are going to 5vz's... plus there is a huge aftermarket for them, compared to the 3vz.
I own both engines, and the 5vz takes the cake hands down, even tho my 3.0/5spd is faster than my 3.4 auto... the 3.4 def makes more power...

getting a little off topic of the thread, but if you tell me what your truck with the 3.4 does 0-60 honestly i will put my g-tech meter in my truck and run a 0-60 run and the quarter mile and take pics of it and we will see. and i didnt say it would deffinitly out run it, i said it would keep up with it with what little ive done to my 3.0.

My friend and I ran up at the Truckfest at our local dragstrip and I ran a low 18 last year (18.14 vs 19.0 the year before trying to powerbrake it) and my friend's '95 3.0 PU (w/74k on the odo) with a 5 speed ran a 18.78 and his has an intake and exhaust and mine has the deckplate mod and we've both been drag racing for over 10 years so we did know what we were doing.

Also remember our times would both be about a little over a second quicker if we were at sea level instead of 5800ft.

It would still be a close race with the older PUs having less weight and the manual tranny but the 3rd gens seem to be geared more agressive even with the auto tranny.

A bone stock '96 4Runner tested by Road & Track ran the 1/4 in 17.1 so mine is pretty much right on target and good for 100+k on the truck.

I am curious to see your numbers so GTech away.

And we need real numbers not guesses or people trying to bench race but that will be hard since there's not alot of people that a)dyno their trucks b)go to the strip

Well, drag the Runner to the strip one time since you'll be one of the few.

I'll probably run the Truckfest again this year but not to see how fast I can go since it's bracket racing but to also hang out with the few guys I can get to go. It's fun since we can bring a grill and socialize in the nice hot sun and run down the strip a few times and talk trash. I do miss the social scene at the strip after retiring my Eclipse but I do have alot more money in the bank now.

That's why we need proof since my 4Runner still has 6 tenths on my friend's 5 speed 3.0 PU w/mods and I'm pretty much stock with heavier than stock tires on it.

I think your '89 felt quicker due to it's less weight but if you put them head to head in a straight line I bet your '99 would pull away toward the end of the 1/4 which is what happened when I raced my friend straight up and he did have a half truck lead for a little bit due to his better launching with the 5 speed.
