the plug itself is totally different between the 2 coils.

The plug may be different but if the pins are the same size you can remove the pins and put them in the same connector. I don't know if they are though.

I can confirm this, I've done it before on my wife's Corolla to install cruise control. It can be tricky though, you do risk warping/cracking the connector. I only did 2 wires and it took a TON of patience.

Now that I've had the 7MGE AFM on there for a month, I want to report back with pro's and con's.

Pro's:
  • Increased throttle response (immediate acceleration when pressing the throttle)
  • Small HP gain
  • Better MPG's, went from 17 to 18 on last tank (50/50 hwy & city)
  • Sounds like a race car when you floor it!

Con's:
  • It's NOISY! The PAIR valve makes a ton of noise when the engine is cold or when decelerating. Not a good noise either, it's like a dragon that's gargling. This is best with a PAIR delete if you don't need to smog it.
  • Won't pass smog but changing it back to stock is easy
  • Takes fine tuning to get it right (mine still pings a bit even with 91 octane)

Good report....im glad to see your gas mileage went up as well. ...... over 18,000 views and still some doubters... And yes I was very happy when I took my PAIR valve off, it is noisy!!!

i am not sure what the 'loud' noise is that's mentioned, but i definitely hear the dragon gargle....and i rather like it. to me, it sounds almost like a baby8 cyl. almost. on decel i get a pronounced gargle and i just like the way is sounds, it might be a combination of the magnafow muffler and silencer box removal but i like.
also, i still am enjoying performance from the AFM swap, and after doing another controversial step (seafoaming engine) throttle response is further improved. so, for less than $100 and a few hours a couple procedures, 7mgte swap and seafoaming the engine, it's like night and day if done correctly.
Note: i haven't adjusted timing yet or bypass screw, just swapped and adjusted cog and a few weeks later, did the seafoam thing off brake booster hose as described and seen in a few vids. throttle response feels great, and anymore power and i'd want discs in the rear to keep her controllable.

Hey if you like it, by all means keep the PAIR! You're right about the magnaflow making the same kind of noise out the other end, now both ends "gargle" on my truck too. I'm slowly getting used to it.

Now if I could just get rid of the pinging... I'd say it's perfect. I've used seafoam before myself with decent results, maybe it's time to give it another try.

i do like it, it is different. with the free-er flowing intake, exhaust, 7mgte swap it is definitely a different animal. a sc'd 3.4, not even the remotest but quite nice it is the holding speed on grades.

Reporting in.

Just thought I would chime in and report on my 7mge upgrade. I'm running the K&N Intake, 7mge AFM, Thorley Headers, Super Turbo cat back exhaust. This mod is well worth the effort. I did have to mess around with the fuel mixture quite a lot to get it dialed in. I ended up, as others have mentioned, advanced timing to 15-18 and +6 clicks rich on the fuel mixture. I just kept going around the block and making adjustments to get it right.

The end result of all the mods I've done is a very different truck from stock. It's way faster, much more powerful, I'm not worried about the HG blowing and it sounds great. I cant report on my mileage but it's not good since I've been driving it like a race car. It's so much more fun to drive now! Thanks to everyone on the forum for the great info, couldn't have done any of these mods without Yotatech.

P.S. the K&N intake mod is really loud especially at idle. That's the only think I don't like about my setup.

Glad you like it, I'm definitely happy on how my truck turned out too. We don't get to have as much fun modding as the 3.4L crowd does but this one helps. Maybe someday I'll get headers...

Ummmmm...... no. 5vze has an MAF we are changing the VAFM. Same idea, but 2 totally different components. The 3vze trucks are obd I which is a little easier to fool than the obd II in your truck. You have plenty of other high performance options that we don't. Good luck

Depends. If you mean you've got a 1996 or newer Taco or 4Runner with a mass air flow sensor then no. If you did a swap and still have the 3VZ-E stock VAFM in it then yes.

7mge AFM part number

for the 7mge supra/cressida AFM swap on a 3vze, what part numbers are best?
I'd like to buy the airbox and AFM at the same time. What about the harness; the last time I tried to unscrew and pull out my stock 3vze AFM I seem to remember ripping out a circuit board and buying another AFM! Don't want to do that again.
Deathcougar thanks for your call! Great to hear from you! taiko

If you feel like searching... there is a thread buried deep in there that lists them all. I found it back in July but can't find it. It has all the part numbers of the "big" VAFM's that will work. Basically though, if you can find a 7MGE AFM off an early 90's Supra it'll work.

Found one: 89 Cressida 7MGE: 197100-3630

that's the one i used.

just out of curiosity....
anyone hear of the gate sticking causing starting issues?
side note: i hear/read the afm opens slightly during start but if not open does not send fuel sending signal.(not entirely clear about this)

Sort of. No signal from VAFM means fuel pump will not turn on, so it maybe be less about the VAFM and more about a weak signal. However I've never observed the VAFM function during start-up so opening slightly might be part of that sequence.
