Angry Invalid VIN!!

I was trying to register for the Toyota owners online site and I keep getting an "This VIN does not exist or is not a Toyota VIN. Please review your input for accuracy". I have checked the dash, door and pink slip and the numbers all match. I called Toyota and they said it is a real VIN but it matches no American records and referred me to Toyota Canada, Toyota Hawaii and Toyota Guam. All three of those also told me that they have no record of that VIN on file. I checked it on Carfax and they have a record that matches what I have (1986 4Runner 22re 4x4) Has anyone else had this experience because I am lost...?

You might also try toyota south america/brazil, or toyota UK/europe, check the ownership history of your truck if it belonged to a serviceman/woman originally it could be from just about anywhere originally. In any case as long as Toyota recognizes it as one of their VINs when you talk to them on the phone they should be able to register it for you.

Toylocost - I checked with the DMV and they show everything correctly.

Aviator - Would you happen to have those numbers to Toyota UK/europe and south america/brazil? I was thinking that also about someone in the service being the original owner.

I may never find out where she came from... lol. The representative that I spoke to originally said thatthey could not register my truck in thier systems without a U.S. VIN ( ) and suggested to register with the Canadian, Hawaiian, etc. Toyota owners club in the country that mine came from. I hope this doesn't disqualify me for the Toyota Owners Club - High Milers Club.

Well there is a web site somewhere that breaks down what the VIN means for 4runners. I'm sorry I dont remember what it is called, someone else may though. Anyways, the VIN should tell you what country it was sold in. I belive its one of the first few letters. Does it start with JT?

Wow, the only thing it "KNOWS" about the 4runner is that it was manufactured by Toyota. Says I have a 5VZ-FE. I've got a 22re, and it didn't know anything else...

That thing may be for later model vehicles, cause it is completely inaccurate for both of my trucks...

Says my 87 pickup has airbags and side curtain airbags. Doesn't know year produced or model of the vehicle, basically the same thing I got with the 4rnr's vin. Psshhhht. Cool link but it would be cooler if it were right.

EDIT: read some of the post and it says the last year recorded was for 2006.

Ha!
I just entered my 94 pickup VIN in the decoder for the hell of it.. Apparently it thinks its a 5VZE with manual belts and dual airbags. LOL..

I sure wish my 94 came with a 5vze and airbags..

I entered it twice and it gave the same thig each time so it's obviously flawed.

Enter the VIN into Google
Click on the first result from carfax.com
It'll say "Look up vehicle with VIN jtXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"

Mine gives me
"Year/Make/Model: 1992 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5
Body Style: UTILITY (BLAZER, JIMMY,SCOUT)
Engine Type: 3.0L V6 FI
Manufactured In: JAPAN"
Hope it helps

Just google Toyota UK for england or Toyota de for Germany [site will be in german but may have english translation]. Toyota au will find you austrailia [but this is unlikely unless your ride is a right hand drive machine], Toyota nl will get you netherlands... any of those sites will get you a contact # for customer service in that country... your best bet to find an english speaker in continental europe might be the nl site though the uk site might be able to help you as well...

don't forget sometimes older VINs are purged from the mfg. databases so they may have lost the record of your truck legitimately

Yeah, ditto with my '87.

I played with the engine code, they have nothing for 22RE in there.

lol it's a black ops vehicle.... It doesn't exist...shhhhhh

Well another explanation it could be one of those during the import tax time they registered it as a truck rather than a 4 runner.
Just a thought.
