I have a 83 22r I am trying to install in my 87 chassis. I have the tranny stabbed in the tranny and 2 bolts in the tranny. But I cant get the engine on the motor mounts. I can get 1 but if I get 1 I cant get the other, is there a trick to this? Also, I was told all the harneses and wiring would be plug and play but a lot of the harneses on the 83 engine done seem to fit any on my 87 chassis just a few, whats the deal?

 

Who told you plug and play? There's a lot of changes between '83 and '87. Plus, the 22r is not fuel injected. So, which wires/harness are you having trouble with?

On the motor...
You should bolt the motor up before you begin installing the tranny.

 

The guy I bought the motor said plug and play. Theres several harneses that dont fit each other I guess. Both motors are carburated not fi. I belive there is only 1 plug of the motor that fits the ones in my 87 chassis and thats the distributor plug I believe.

 

well if he is just swapping motors then the tranny should never leave the truck.

very little is common between the 83 22r and an 87 22r. even the block and head changed.
to make it work, you'd need everything from the 87, except the block and head, bolted to the 83 block and head.

 

Crap, I didnt realize all this until I already bought the motor. What is the best fix I can do to make this engine work in my 87' truck?

 

Put it on craigslist and dump it. Start fresh.

can I just cut the harneses off my 87 engine and splice them onto the 83?

 

move the intake, exhaust, etc. from the 87 engine to the 83. so that the only things different are the 83 block and head in your 87

 

wow sounds I just got myself in a mess. You honestly think I should just get rid of this engine? Can I just take the intake and carb and all and just switch it over to the 83 block? Are the alternators and starter different? Will the 87 exhaust manifold bolt onto the 83 block?

 

I'm pretty sure the 87 head won't fit the 83.

The harnesses may be different but it shouldn't be that hard to splice the connectors.

 

I know the head wont but what about the intake, and the exhaust manifold? The 83 was also missing the ps pump but it looks like it will bolt right now.

Well the guy was right, 85% of the plugs were the same as my 87 I didnt have to change anything. I got the starter hooked up and the engine turned iover fine. Now I just have to figure all the vacuum hoses out, most were already hooked up but like 3. Engine was running when pulled from 83 truck. One of the differences was the water pump on the 83 has 2 plugs and the 87 only has 1 but the 87 plug fits on both of the 83 plugs, I just need to figure out which one to put it on.
