So I have a 1994 22-RE 4runner that I just installed the LCE ceramic headers on and did the whole exhaust at the same time. New Cat, O2 sensor, and all the pipes.
So a few days later it throws the 71 code which is EGR related. You guys know any tricks that might fix this?
I'm thinking I might have freed up the exhaust carbon when I pulled the exhaust system and plugged the EGR. The engine is rebuilt, but does have 260K on the truck and accessories like the EGR.
Any tips would help how to clear this code and let me not be in limp mode would be helpful.

 

you're not in limp mode so don't worry about that. 71 basically means that the EGR temp is not within spec after the engine has warmed up. I've seen it happen on otherwise healthy engines when it's abnormally cold outside. Reset the ECU by pulling the EFI fuse or by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and go drive. See if it comes back. If it does, it could be caused by a thermostat that is a little on the cold side or a faulty EGR Temp sender.

 

I appreciate the tech. I never have had an EGR act up when I hooked up the bypass air pump pipe and every other fitting to this header. I checked all the gaskets and they are good. I've seen them act up with other emission systems when you bypass all of the required hookups. Not that anyone would ever do that.....
I'll do the disconnection on Tuesday when I have my next day off and I've read in the Chilton guide about the EGR itself. I bought the Helm technical manual for my Acura TL, does anyone know the best technical shop manual for the 2nd gen 4runners? I would really like to get something better than the Chilton guide since it's about as helpful as a cold sometimes.

 

And it has been cold around here at night especially, dropping below freezing every night. Compared to the rest of the country, not so bad, but cold for here.

 

I pulled the EFI fuse, much easier than disconnecting the battery and the check engine light hasn't come back on. I've driven it everyday to work, so far so good.
