Input shaft bearing

My 91 sounds like it has a bearing going out in the tranny. I makes the sound in 1,2,3,5 and neutral. When I shift into 4th it's just as quiet and smooth as you could want. I have a couple questions; first, could an input shaft bearing be causing this and if so, why not 4th gear? Second, can a country boy like myself change and input shaft bearing or does it require some special pullers? The best way I know to explain the sound is, it sounds exactly like the throw out bearing did when it was shot and the clutch was let out. It's definitely a bearing.

While I got ya, if anyone knows where there is a tranny sitting in or around North Georgia, I could probly use it!!

My spare tranny that I was hoping was good does just the oppistite of yours. All gears are great except 4th gear. Almost sounds like exact same noise you are saying only mine is 4th gear only.

I dont know about changing input shaft, but I to am on the hunt for a tranny.

If it were the input shaft wouldn't make the noise in all gears? Just a thought. Have you checked the tranny oil?

It could be the input pilot bearings, they are the rollers inside the input shaft, it would make noise in every gear except direct (4thgear) because the input turns a different speed than the output in every gear except direct.

Ok, so it could be the input pilot bearing, is this something I can change or do I need special tools?

Thanks for the input.

You probably could change it. But I would just have the whole trany rebuilt at this point. Way worth it, compared to changing out one bearing and having the next one go out later. Tearing a transmission out 4 times in 4 years is a joke.

Ok, my next question is, how do I find out if I have a G or a W tranny? And is one better than the other?

mine had bad input shaft bearing. had noise in all gears but 4th, as well as in neutral (4th is direct gear) - sounded like marbles jangling around inside. decided it was best to just get it rebuilt. shop tech sent me a pic of my chewed up input shaft splines where 40-50% were broken off....yikes.

Could be the gears.4th really is not a gear so it cant make noise unless a bearing is bad.How much trans oil have you been adding?
