Hi everyone.

I just got a '91 Pickup 22R-E. Everything is going pretty good. The guy didn't have it running because of starter problems. I am in the process of fixing that and replacing the crankshaft pulleys. Other than that I think there is only one other thing wrong with it (more like something that bothers me). Apparently the owner before me lost the keys and needed to get to work. So he hot wired it but that didn't solve the steering lock problem... here was his solution.



it just dangles there. no bueno for me / good for car thieves.



I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on fixing this and putting it back to normal. I am not to concerned about fixing the steering lock. I just want to reattach the ignition lock.

P.S. I guess he found the keys the next day.

 

lol, well that's one way to do it.

Weld it back on, or hit the junkyard for the bracket.

 

I have an entire steering column from a 91 if you want. Pretty easy to replace (4 bolts and the steering joint. With ignition lock and keys. The lock part is on the steering column with some nearly impossible to remove bolts. Changing the whole steering column is easier. Make offer if interested, I'm in Alabama.

 

thanks 91diesel. That sounds like a good idea but I am short for cash so I am trying to go for as cheap as possible...so I think shipping would be to much...

There is a 88 at the salvage. Does anyone know if the steering column off of that will work?

Do you mean the whole steering column or just the ignition lock. I don't think I can get those bolts off of the ignition lock. they are made to not be removed.

 

looking at it... I wonder if there's a way you could put some square tubing into the dash and lock (where it's cut), then drill small holes for cotter pins to hold it together... and you could JB weld around the joint as you assemble it to help keep the wiggles down.

 

that was kinda what I was thinking but there is limited room to work with and there are curves on the ignition lock so it would be kind of hard to get the square tubing to fit right.

Would welding work... all I have is a flux wire mig. will that work with that material?

and its al-u-ini-um so yeah you would need some of that wire to weld it

 

not even sure it's aluminium () looks like pot-metal (die cast) to me.

the point in using the square stock is to prevent the ignition switch part from being able to pivot on the bar you insert. if you can pack the hole(s) with jb weld as you insert the square tube, that should give you some reinforcement.
after that's all cured, you could probably hit the seam with a few tack welds as well to keep it from moving.
