IFS removal. Is it really that easy?
Took a glance under the rig yesterday and now have a question concerning the IFS. I know,"surprise"!
It looks to me like there are 6 bolts on each side, 2 big ones holding the IFS up to the frame, a larger one on the front of the housing and a couple in a cross brace. So I just remove all of those, drop the third and reinstall the 4.56third that I have? I mean is it that easy?
Thanks guys.

Maybe you could do his for him? Then, afterward, you can do mine?! Hahaha!
It's simple..yes. Easy? I don't think so. It will be a chore. Breaker bars, cheater bars, strong sockets. strong arms, strong beer....you'll need it all...lol!

So what you're saying is, you want to drop the whole ifs to replace your front diff with a 4.56 unit?
Just undo the 3 bolts holding it in, the 12 17mm bolts (6 on each side) holding the cv's onto the diff and the 4 14mm bolts holding the front driveshaft on.

I dropped and reinstalled my front diff in about 4.5 hours, all while buzzing and rolling around in dirt with a cheap socket set and a few wrenches.
you can do it yourself.
mine was only tricky because my frame and IFS components are a bit bent, so when I dropped the old diff (cross bar and all), my IFS split out and one traveled forward, one backwards. lining the bolts back up again took about as long as removing the entire thing.

Easy as 1,2,3...
1. Drive Shafts Off (12 nuts, some impact may be required)
2. Propeller Shaft Off (4 bolts/nuts)
3. Diff Off (5 bolts/nuts). Don't try to remove the diff from the rear two mounts (single bolts). Easier to remove the 2 bolts on each mount.

I'm confused; do you want to swap in a solid axle or just remove the diff?
Just removing the diff is a piece of cake, re-install is a bit of a p.i.t.a. cutting out the entire IFS & replacing it with a solid axle would be a little more in depth & will require welding (quality welds, no possum crap) for safeties sake I'd say if you have to ask on a forum - get help with the sas. If it's just a diff replacement - go for it. Just be sure you have a decent floor jack to put the diff back in....I have a good one & still had to rig up a 2x6 & some parachute cord to hold the unit on while I maneuvered it into position, a helper is handy to have but I have dropped my front diff twice by myself & re-installed it that way as well.
