IFS lift vs SAS
#41
If you wnat to see what IFS can do with 33x12.50s go to webshots.com and look for kbruzer77 photo's. My 4 runner is sitting on a OME lift, detroit locker and 4.88 gears and it goes LOTS of places. Look at the rest of the rigs in the pics too, those are my wheel'n buddies who all have extremely built rigs and I do a pretty darn good job at keeping up with them. Then decide how much money you want to spend and what IFS can do for you.

How hardcore is your wheeling? I climb a lot of hills around here that the guys with full size trucks with 37's, solid axles, and rear lockers can't. With ball joint spacers, small torque on the torsion bars and FJ80 rear springs you should be looking at 3 inches of lift or a little more. With the right backspace on the wheels and pounding the fender seam a little you'll handle 33's. If you rub put a 1 or 1.5" Roger Brown body lift and you are good to go for a lot cheaper than you were considering.

im with the stay ifs till it breaks notion... and just for you guys who like to rock crawl heres something I just heard of recently.. throw on a slight body lift, just enough to clear the frame underneath.... and then research a drivetrain lift. you can use spacers on engine mounts to lift it up 2 inches which would greatly reduce pinion angles on already lifted trucks, and also it tucks everything up in between the frame rails.... then you get the new transfer case cross member, add your armor... and you can practically cover the whole underside with metal if you dont mind driving a tank..... hows that for an idea

I've advocated that for a long time and almost everyone on these forums get their pantyhose twisted up, it seems, when anyone mentions a bl.
A mild/moderate bl can offer huge advantages that a suspension lift simply can't.
A bl combined with a suspension lift can do wonders.
Going high (as in "big" suspension lifts), is not the best option for anything.
A high COG (talk about just flat out silly are those that carry their spares, when off road, on the roof
), is not your friend

hi so do use think it is a good idea to stay with ifs from a geuss i fink ifs meens independant front suspension. i have a 86 hilux surf i fink that is a 4runner where use are from.. i wont be doing rocks or anything like that i will just be doing mud and clming hils going frue deep water sorta thing. just want to have fun with friends and meet new people. at the moment the rear leafs are about to giveway only a inch of clarence left.my brother inlaw has a 84 hilux with leaf spring alround i was going to put leaf springs on the front of mine but im not sure what to do at the monent?. what would be the way to go?

hey fred, I like your posts actually, i think a body lift is great in small quantities... but doesnt a drivetrain lift sound wicked? imagine literally being able to make the whole undercarriage into one giant skid plate! besides guys we drive toyotas... there is nothing more fun than going with a huge ford on 45's with like 15 inch lift... and taking your 2 inch lifted runner with locker ... before you know it you'll be trying to figure out how to winch his 10000lb ass around the trail.
id say the only things you need to fix on toyotas is 1- some clearance...2-armor....3-traction...and 4-approach and departure angles.
anything else is just something else that will break ( and usually at night when you cant see and its on like blasted rock or mud or somewhere that is horrible to laydown while you work)

bryan has it right, my goal is to take an 86-88 runner or 86-95 truck, 2" body lift, 3" or so suspension lift and 2" drivetrain lift. Then add skids and a rear (maybe front) locker. It will do most anything you throw at it this way, have the clearance and work well. Then throw in a dual t-case and some other goodies and your good to go.

fink = think
meens = means
independant = independent
clming = climbing
frue = through
alround = all around
clarence = clearance
monent = moment

You know, it's the WORLD Wide Web, not the "English speaking only wide web" - it's entirely possible that English isn't their first language, and I bet they did a much better job with English than you would do with their language...

You don't read my post (or pay attention to 'em) do you

You simply cannot lift these rigs without having serious steering failure. That coupled with the fact that no matter what you do, you'll never have uber flex, and the stock set up performs very well. (TC, SSchaefer3 are perfect examples of stock with tires, and stock with stock tires, and what can be done).
The best thing that you can do for these, assuming you want bigger tires, and more ground clearance, is to leave the front stock, level the rear, do a body lift, then a drivetrain lift, and put on your tires.
I don't advocate going larger than 33's at first, until you learn to drive it without breaking axles. But, whatever you want.
If you must lift the truck, this is hands down the cheapest, most reliable way to get bigger rubber, and more clearance on an early IFS truck.

well, i think for now i will stick with OME 2" lift and get all the HD options for it, stick with that for now and do a SAS later if needed. i'll get ARBs front and rear lockers then and i should not have to do to much more then. i cant thank you all for all the info you gave me, it has helped me choose a wise lift option. thanks again!

In the same boat here I have a 94 yota with 4" rough country lift an 33-12.50. Don't do a whole lot of off roadin cause the body is in great condition but an it's a dail driver but I hear people argue both ways on this subject.... Still unsure

New to the yotatech-- Stumbled across a super clean 89 4runner that I really don't want to cut into parts. Wanted to just do some light wheeling/river crossing type stuff. Kid/dog car type thing. Any input on which one of these kits would be GREATLY appreciated. Saw some stuff on ebay for under a hundred on the front end. THen leaf springs and shackles on the rear? I had a straight axel years ago. I'm keeping the IFS.
