How are 4:88's on 31s or 32's?

My pickup is an 89 with a 22re stick shift. Its got 31's and stock 4:10 gears on it right now and is a dog and the speedometer is off 10-15 mph. After researching some on this site I was planning on changing gears to 4:56 but I have not found any yet.

My local junkyard has a 94 4runner with G144 gear code so I am guessing its got 4:88's and they should fit my truck right?

Has anyone ran 4:88s with 31's? How do they perform? This truck is going to be a daily driver back and forth to work and only off road around my property hauling wood and stuff. Work commute is half highway and half city driving.

I doubt I will be going any bigger on wheels any time soon unless I find a good deal on 32's cause thats the biggest that will fit it with out lifting it from what I have read.

Perfect match for your 31s. Those v6 gears will bolt right in. If it's got an ABS sensor in the rear 3rd (probably will) be sure to clip that wire and take the sensor to plug the hole with.

I ran that setup for a while on my 22RE and I did not really like it for DD. It rev'ed pretty high on the highway and consumed more gas on average. You quickly switch from 1st->3rd gear instantly! Its kinda fun in the beginning as the truck feels a bit quick in the city driving and starting from red lights.

I now run 33" and it seems a lot better on the highway. I think 32x11.5 might work as well.

Just my opinion but it might work fine for you ... I know v6/auto came with 4.88 and 31 tires from factory.

when i bought my truck it had 4.10/31s like yours now. i ran 4.88s/31 combo on my 22re/5spd rig for almost 2 years because my michelins just wouldn't wear down. it was fine, but like hgill stated, the RPMs are a tad high at highway speeds. at 70mph the RPMs were around 3500 and the speedo was off in the opposite direction yours is off currently.

truck was pretty quick off the line though (haha...for a 22re 4x4 ) and was great when off-roading since i now had more torque at low speeds - but for hwy commuting it was not so desirable IMO on long hauls. if i drove more hills or was hauling stuff regularly, then it might be ok - but my work commute is 30 miles flat ground.

i now have 33s and am back to stock ratios and speedo is correct. a 32" tire might be great as suggested. i've even though of upgrading to 5.29s some day to get the extra torque back -- but if that happens i'm probably SASing also and going with at least 35s - which all cancel it out.

i didn't really notice any MPG differences in-town between the 3 different tire/gear setups i've run. if anything, i'd say i lost MPGs on the hwy after swapping gears - since the oversize tires to gear ratio made the RPMs less at hwy speeds (but also stress the engine slightly more). best i ever got was 27mph somehow on a road trip with injector cleaner in the tank (4.10/31s) now i get pretty much normal 18-19mpg since i've got a lead foot and my 22re is getting tired.

i'd say go for it and buy the gears. you could always just install the rear diff and drive it around to see if it's to your liking before installing the front. the natural progression is to eventually up your tire size if you ever wheel your truck, so some time down the road you'll probably go with bigger tires to match the gears. you decide
