idle problems, 1990 4runner

I have a 1990 Toyota 4runner 4x4 automatic w/ 3vze eng. I was told to set my idle at 800 rpm, so I did. When I put the truck into drive, my rpm went down to 600 rpm. Do I set my idle to 800 rpm in park or drive?

I like the idle speed on my truck as high as possible without causing it to diesel when shut off. I want the a/c and charging system to put out at idle. If you have an auto trans, that can be a factor in choosing a speed that works for you. At high mileage, some factory specs go out the window. Just my opinion.
