I hopped in my 4Runner the other morning, and by the time i got to my work, i noticed the idle was high, almost 2 thousand !!! So i took it for a drive, then i walked on it... and it settled down to normal.


Now today its doing the same thing again... you start it up, and the idle creeps up...

Has anyone had any experiance in this ?

My high idle issue was a clogged coolant passage in the idle air bypass valve in the bottom of the throttle body. I eventually got to checking it after checking everything else. Very little coolant was flowing through there. I pulled the throttle body and flushed the lines, idle went back to normal.

It could also be the TPS sensor. Possibly the AFM. Or a vacuum leak somewhere.

My truck gets a sticky idle every few months If I don't clean the TB (around the butterfly and wax valve).

remove the intake and see if there is lots of gunky buildup in the TB. Grab some deep creep (areosol seafoam) and an old toothbrush and clean it up

 

How hard is it to remove the throttle body for cleaning? Do i have to disconnect the cables etc ?

 

You can clean it fairly good with the TB still attached.

Removing is not that hard:

-drain about almost a gallon of coolant out.
-unhook intake hose
- unhook throtle and other cables
- remove wax valve coolant hoses
- unhook TPS
- unbolt 4 mounting bolts and remove

Pick up a new gasket if yours has been on for a long time.

 

I tried cleaning the throttle body with TB Cleaner, took it out for a rip and the idle settled down, to about 1k. The next day it's back to doing the same old thing.. except myne is worse, around 2k.

Are there any sensor's in the 94Runner that also affect idle ?? My friend was telling me about a throttle body sensor, and that could be going , but i'm not sure.


I should also say that this problem started after a frosty night, and the next morning it was acting up... Sould it be my Temerature sensure?? perhaps that's faulty, and it's stuck and idleing Hi thinking it's freezing out...

Anyone know the name of that sensor and how much it costs ?

 

whats the temperature like around there?...you know it "fast idles" when its cold until it warms up, right?

 

problem solved, slow rad leak, low collant causing erratic idle becase the air pockets.

Fix: Rad Change

Idle is fine now..... even though the throttle body wasnt' the problem, at least i learned how to clean it good thanks guys.....

 

I didn't even clue in to check my coolant even after you had mentioned what happend to you... !!! I will pay attention from now on !
