I want better MPG
Ok so I've read a lot of the post on here about MPG/ Fuel Economy. I am going to do a tune up with new wires, plugs, cap, rotor, and O2 Sensor. I saw some post about advancing the timing. The FSM says 8* is what it should be at. I live up here in Denver where the air is a little thinner. Should I adjust the timing and if so to what?

Well I found people saying that you should advance it anywhere from 2* to 7* and no one was agreeing on anything. I wanted to know if the high altitude had anything to do with it and if so where should I adjust it to. I know the MPG has been talked about a lot and that where I got everything else from. I didn't see but 2 or 3 post with the timing adjusting to get better MPG. Sorry if it has been beaten up I did look for about an hour or two before I posted.

Ditto.
I did seat of the pants tuning on my modded 3VZE and then took it to the dyno.
The dyno confirmed that 20° made the most power and lowest emissions w/ good AFR.
Just make sure your knock sensing system is working properly or some bad gas could give you one of these.
Just don't expect miricles from advancing the timing.

Set it factory.
It has a knock sensor and it will run as much advance as it can without ping. You can over advance it to where it can't back out of the timing enough and then you are going to trash the motor.
If you want more advance run 91 in it. Course any MPG gains and savings you see with be lost in paying .20 cents a gallon more.
Most MPG problems can be cured with liberal beatings of the driver every time they pin the peddled to the floor.
Smooth acceleration, watch the lights if its about to change then just let it coast down. Short shifts at 2500 rpm with minimal throttle. SLOW DOWN! The aerodynamics on a truck SUCK. The faster you go the more wind drag you create.
Toyota was very careful to set the truck up to get optimal fuel economy Keeping it stock and maintained (tune up, stock size tires oil changes etc) will result in the best MPG.
Big heavy wheels and tires kill mpg. Run a narrow tire in the factory hight and it will be the best MPG in most cases.
If you are running the factory steels see if you can find some aluminum. The factory steels are HEAVY. My 86 factory Chrome steels with 235x75x15 Unijunks were 61.5lb each. The 33x12.5x 15 BFG KO's on 15x7 AR OutlawII's are 68lb. I had planned on 10.5's but got a scorching deal on the 12.5's. The 10.5s may have been lighter then the factory set up. With a re-gearing my MPG may not have changed much at all with the tall tires and the 10.5's.
