I sold my truck!! What a sad day!!
First off, I had to! Or,... I chose to. I need more room, and I don't like 4-runners. It was a 93 4x4 standard cab 22RE. It had a ticking sound that I thought was the valves, but it wasn't. I adjusted those things hot and cold about 10 times. Nothing, still ticked. Anyways, thanks to all of you that helped me with my head gasket woes, and all of the other questions that I had that I got excellent advice for. I guess I'm off to go look at Cherokee's now. Anything bad that you've heard about them?? I'd love to hear about anyone's previous experience with the 4.0L, and the auto trannys in em. I'm not lookin back at Toyotas. They're suicidal!! Lol!

Cherokees are unibody weak axles and no tow points.

i understand your logic but aslong as your have a thick wallet for repairs a heep will be an ok choice!

What's wrong with 4Runners, its the same as your truck, but with a covered back essentially.

cherokees have a certain squeek... ALL OVER... that you cant get rid of... the 4.0L is good only if you can afford the stroker for it... otherwise it feels more gutless than the 3.0... dont get a 5 speed... they have MANY problems... the auto is the best choice, but there is a LOT of vibration and road noise that come along with that motor/tranny combo... also, expect to replace the u-joints every year... also, they have as much body roll as a 4runner... plus parts are somewhat expensive... thats parts for the motor and tranny mind you...
and the reason i know this is because my cousin drives a 94 cherokee and she HATES it, but because her stepdad is a jeep mechanic, thats what shes stuck with... lol... plus with a 3 inch lift her 33x11.50s rub so bad that she has grooved them...

Dude, sad to hear your giving up on Yota's, but I can kind of see where your coming from....my 91 Runner with the 3.0 has been nothing but aggrevation since I got it.
I had an '87 Cherokee (XJ) before this Runner, and the thing never even gave me a hickup, ran sick no matter what the hell I did to it. Had the 4.0L with the Aisin Auto behind it, the stock classic Dana 30 in the front and Dana 35 in the rear, not the best axles, but that thing was tough as hell man. Would run through snow or the beach in 4WD like a monster. Bought it for $200 put $500 into it and it never gave me a single problem.
Bought the Runner and the thing can barely idle, stalls out, doesn't go into 4Lo, sags in the rear, and has the torque of my grandfather in his wheel chair. That old 4.0L in my Jeep was ballsy, way more than this Runner.
I feel like the Runner is gonna break every time I do something hard to it.
There's something about Yota's though, I love them. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment.
Jeep's are great rigs man, but I have heard that like somewhere between 97 and 2000 they had bad exhaust manifolds, so maybe check into that.
You can find everything you need at 4X4wire.com, in the Jeep section.
Enjoy!

I hope you don't actually believe that.
Have you looked at the recent and significant decline in resale value for 3rd gen 4runners? Insane deals can be found that were unheard of a short year ago. With gas prices being the sole cause, people start to panic and the "Blue Book" begins to dictate.
The 5VZE is proven to be one of the most reliable engines ever made.
Why in the world would you consider a pos Cherokee before a 3rd gen??
Not to mention all the major differences in overall quality.

Chrisbnaz!! Yeah I'm Jason's brother. Do I know you?? Anyway, here's the link to the Cherokee I'm lookin at. No B/S, I would love to have a nice Toyota but I like Mopar too. They've really treated me well in the past. Here's the link to it. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...dpage=%20thumb Or just go to autotrader.com and search for a 98 cherokee in the 85220 zip code. It'd be the red one half way down for $5,000. It looks good.

Screw the decline in price on 4-runners. I'd take a Cherokee in good shape any day over a 4-Runner.(also declining RAPIDLY in value) Those damn 4.0L's feel like v-8's compared to the 3.0's. And they don't smoke the head gaskets after 150k miles. Lol! My mom has a '93 4.0 with 269k mi on it. No major repairs and it still hauls ass!

I don't know why you're even asking for jeep advice on a toyota forum...
We're CLEARLY very biased towards toyota lol
Just do what you want. That's what it comes down to.

dude, the newer 4runners DONT have the 3.0 in them, they have the 3.4, which makes the jeep 4.0 seem like a Vdub. supercharge that, and you got something meaner than hell. dont get a heep, id get a FORD before a Heep.

He's obviously sold on the Jeep... If thats what you want, get it, why bother asking Toyota guys what they think? The only reason you'd do such a thing is because you're unsure... and for good reason, Toyota's have a rock-solid reliability. Sure, you've had bad luck with your yota, it's rare, but it does happen to older vehicles. For all you know the previous owner beat the hell out of it. I suggest following the suggestions of the guys above.. get a 97-99 4Runner with Toyota's best engine, the 3.4L. Good economy, great power, and a rock-solid block. To add to the argument, the Jeep isn't even close to being in the same class as the 4Runner, for looks, comfort or anything for that matter. It's a no brainer.
I mean, look at this fine example.
But like I said, if you want a 2WD Jeep (like your mom's?) go get it and stop beating around the bush asking us Toyota guys to tell you it's a good idea, cause it will never happen.

I've help build many, many jeeps. They're decent, but WAY more expensive to build, lift, and bulletproof. The stock 5spd blows, but slap a NV4500 in er and you've got a near bulletproof tranny up to 500hp. The 4.0 puts out decent power, but it's nowhere near as reliable the 22re or 5vze. You can squeeze out some more good power with a stroker kit and an intake makes a good difference.
I dunno, but I just love my yoter. For the price of a decent lift to clear 35-37s and all the needed upgrades on a jeep, you can build one bruiser of a yoter. Plus everyone has a cookie cutter jeep, and I just hate that. That's why for all my trail rigs, they've all had a little of the WTF factor.
All vehicles have their pro's and con's. It's up to you.
