I had a similar problem on my 94 PU. The flange on top of the fuel pump bracket was rotten. I dropped the tank (wish I had just lifted the bed.) I ended up replacing the bracket and all of the fuel lines as well as the filter at the same time.

 

Well I said in an earlier post I was bringing my gas smell to the dealer. I brought it in 3 different times for the smell and other problems. They never found anything for me. Then my check engine light came on a few weeks ago. My brother in law checked the code and it was the cartridge or charcol filter. This also explains the gas smell as this filter allows the gas tank to breath. Filter is easy to replace but very $$$$$$

happened to me about 2000 miles ago. I got the injectors replaced and a new fuel line. Now no gas smell and better milege

I have had the strong petrol smell in the cabin of my 1998 Landcruiser and around the petrol filler door, ever since I bought it.
I noticed from the previous owner's service records that Toyota couldn't find the cause. It was only three years old then.
It is really taking all the enjoyment out of the vehicle.
It gets really bad when I go round corners, when the weather is hot, go uphill, and when the tank becomes quite empty.
Nearly everyone suggested it may be the charcoal canister but because they are so expensive I was reluctant to do it. Tried a new petrol cap, instead.
But, eventually I did buy one and it cured it immediately!
I couldn't believe it! Everytime I got into the vehicle I noticed the absence of the smell. I never stopped appreciating the fact that it was gone!
Then, 2 1/2 months later it came back in all it's horrible glory!!!
Took the canister back to Toyota and the guy didn't think I would be eligible for a replacement!
I really am fed up. I can't get anyone to find out what the problem is and I couldn't, in all honesty, sell it to anyone.
Does anyone know if it is safely possible to bypass the canister and if so, how could it be done?
