I hear a tapping when I start the 4runner??
Ok, I have another question so I hope you all are not getting tired of me. lol
When I start the 4runner, I can hear a tapping sound but it isn't a continuous tapping with the same sound but more like an inconsistent sound if that makes sense? to me, it really sounds like it is coming from the exhaust. i put my ear up to the cat and it seems to escalate it a little bit more. (basically i hear it more clearly) i could be exaggerating but it really sounds like it is coming from this general area. when it heats up, I can't hear it as much if at all but just when i start it for the first few minutes or so. what do you all think it can be?
the reason why I am asking so many questions is because my wife just passed her Praxis test for teacher certification and will be driving to school around 50 miles one way. i want to sell her Explorer with 130000 miles on it and have her drive my 05 tacoma to school and back. I want her to have something reliable. i was going to drive the 4runner as my daily driver since all i have to drive is 15 miles round trip to work. i want to get all the kinks out before we do this. we have somebody interested in the explorer so i need to hurry up. thanks for all help!!

Exhaust leaks sound like taps and knocls to the untrained ear...
Try spraying PB blaster on all of the nuts to loosen the rust up and tighening them up a little to see if it minimizes the sound. The exhaust donuts may be burned up causing a leak...
I'd tighten the manifold nuts, the crossover nuts, and if there are any by the cat tighten those too.
It may be time for that aftermarket exhaust you've been wanting.

well, we found out what the tapping was. One of the radiator hose clamps was rattling against some metal causing the tap that I heard. I am in the process of getting a new radiator put on so we allevaited that problem. just thought I would keep you all posted and thank you for all the replies!!

I was just about to say I had that rattling sound and it was my CAT. I failed emissions and that's what caused it.
You can easily tell if they're bad by banging on it without the truck running. If you hear rattling when you bang it, it's bad.
