how to put distributor gear back on

When I removed the distributor gear from my 22re it was tight and I had to tap the wrench with a hammer . This rotated the timing chain slightly to the left. When I replace this gear and put the bolt back in should I tap it lightly and turn the chain back to it original spot. Is there a way to hold the timing gear while tightening the bolt on the end of the cam?
