How to pull your 22RE

I'm going to put this up for a peer review of how to pull a 22re. Once all the bugs (aka unknown parts are named) are worked out, I will strip out the comments and write it up as a tech artical. I"m simply doing it because I have a bit of down time and as a newbie, I found it confusing to find all the parts in the Toyota manual. I hope the picts and arrows will help others like me speed up their projects and not have to be embarrased to ask newbie questions. I'm still in the process of rebuilding the engine and it will take some time to finish up this project.

I am following the Toyota Manual found at https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f128...-years-156128/

My truck is a 86 Manual 2wd. Do note that because it is an 86 your engine may be different (PAIR manifold and PCV hose placement). The later years had more 'stuff'. The manual covers both auto and 4wd. Natually I have a skipped the steps which do not apply to me. Next to some of the steps you will find page reference like "EC-3/pg103". This is a reference in the manual about the part being removed. The first part "EC-3" referes to the page numbering in the manual. The second part "pg103" referes to the page in the PDF. Not all things will have a reference, just be happy when there is one.

Starting on EM47/pg76
  1. Disconnect Cable from Negative Terminal of Battery
  2. Remove Engine Under Cover (not shown)
  3. Remove Engine Hood
Disconnect the washer hose from the hood
  4. Drain Coolant From Radiator and Cylinder block (not shown)
  5. Drain Auto Tranny Fluid (with A/T)
  6. Remove Air-Cleaner Hose and Air Cleaner (only hose shown)
  7. Remove Coupling fan with fan (not shown due to picture angle)
  8. Remove Two Heater Hoses
  9. Remove Radiator w/ Shroud
    a. Disconnect the two coller Hoses (with A/T)
    b. Disconnect the radiator upper and lower hoses from engine (only upper shown)
    c. Disconnect the reservoir hose
d Remove the radiator with shroud (not shown)

10. Disconnect Cables from Bracket (There are 2 if you have A/T, See page EM-47 for alt pict)

11. Disconnect the Following Parts: (seen in several pict)
(a) PCV hose No.1 and No.2 (EC-4)
(b) Brake Booster hose (shown as already disconnected and where it would be)
(c) Air Control Valve Hoses (HELP!! I can't find them, I removed them but don't know where they are maybe FI-58/227)
(d) EVAP hose (from canister) (EC-3/103)
(e)Actuator hose (with cuise controle (which I don't have, pict please if anybody has one))
(f) EGR vacuum modulator hose (EC-3/103)
(g) Air valve hose No.1 from the throttle body
(h) Air valve hose No.2 from the chamber
For (i), (j),(k) and (m) see below
(l) Cold start injection pipe

(i) Water by-pass hose No.2 and No3. from the throttle body (In this picture the throttle body has already been remove and the hoses disconnected. It was near impossible to get a clear picture of the hoses while the T-Body was still connected)

(j) Air Control valve hose for the actuator (FI-58/pg227)
(m) BVSB hose (EC-3/pg103)

(k) Pressure regulator hose from the chamber (FI-49/pg217)

12. Disconnect Following Wires

(a) Cold Start injection wire

(b) Throttle position sensor wire

(c) Air Valve Wire (This was taken once the intake manifold was removed, I did not get a picture before takeing it off, but you get the idea of where it is)

13. Remove Chamber with Throttle Body

(a) Remove the two bolts holding the EGR valve to the chamber. (I have shown an alternate point to disconnect in the blue arrow, which I used in the later pictures. I do suggest to follow the red arrows. A bolt to be removed in step 13c is also shown here)

(b) Disconnect the chamber from the stay.
(More bolts and nuts for step 13c are shown. Notice the wire harness attachments to a couple of the bolts.)

(c) (Picture not shown) Remove the bolts and nuts holding the chamber to the intake manifold. There are 4 bolts and 2 nuts. (EM-48/pg78 has a good line drawning)

(d) Remove the chamber with the throttle body. (This pict shows the removed part. )

just a head's up... "A", the PCV valve piping, is not the same for all 22re's.
don't see a reference to the coolant pipe to the bottom of the intake.
don't see a reference to the idle-up valve.

*edit- still working on my list.

*continued-
could you add that your engine is not the same as an ~89+ 22re?

I don't see the PAIR manifold or its related components

and I'm looking at the pics, and my 88 is different from that as well.

Will Do.. Thanks for the review. I found a hose mistake 11i. I said it was the coolant bypass but it is the other Air control hose 11c I could not find.

Step 13 has been added.

(Finally received my parts from Marlin Crawler and Engine Builder. I took my piston heads down to the machine shop to be miked and have the block to be bored out. I hope I get the block and head back before Thanksgiving. It would be nice to work on it for the 4 days off)

Awesome writeup. Only thing I can think to add to that are the actual lift points you used.

MHST Guy, are you asking for where I attached the cherry picker to the engine? (IF so it will come. I'm added a section at a time. Editing the pictures takes a bit of time, but it will come)

i always just thought you hook the cherry picker chains to the hooks on the sides of the engine.

the painful part is getting the tranny and transfer care out as one unit. I had a hard time cause the truck was so high up, I dropped it on 2x4s to get it lower.

Nice right up PDX, I wish I'd seen this before I pulled mine.

Putting it back in now and have run into a bit of a snag. You got a picture showing the connector on the idle air valve, do you have any other pictures of that assembly? I'm trying to figure out all the connections between the idle air valve, coolant bypass pipe, intake manifold, etc. It looks like in the picture you posted some of the hoses are still connected - do you have any other angles or know if a diagram exists anywhere? I've got the factory service manual but even it doesn't show this. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
