How hard is it to replace a radiator in a 22RE?

So I drove up to the mountains this weekend and the 4runner overheated. Had to turn around, drive down let it cool, drive down, cool drive down cool, you get the idea.

Left it at a shop on Monday. They told me radiator had a small leak and is causing it to overheat when put under that much stress. They said driving around town is ok, but thats it.

I already replaced thermostat a few months back. They said water pump looked good. So I decided to drive it back to fort collins from denver and replace it myself.

Got any good advice or tips!

 

Fairly straight forward. Took me maybe 30 - 45 mins. Hoses can be a bugger if they've never been off.

Drain.
Remove hoses.
Remove fan shroud.
Remove 4 support bolts.
Then lift out.
Then do the same thing exept backwards.

 

have it re roded, cost me under 90. its nice and pretty again, well, first....

while its cool, very cool, undo the cap, remove the hoses, fan shroud and fan, took me about 45 min for all that stuff

than 4 bolts, on my 87 and it comes right off pretty simple.

you did not say what year yours is thow, mine has a steel radiator, the new ones are plastic with alum core, so you just have to replace it

you dont have to take off the fan. also u dont have to take the shroude off till the old radiator is out, easier that way!

You have to at least take the bottom part off, otherwise you cant get it past the fan. Unless you have no bottom part.

 

I know I paid less than $200 for a factory toyota radiator (wholesale) so I just could not see having it repaired.
Also, a small leak will not cause your truck to overheat unless you have let the coolant level drop. Just keep the reservoir filled if that is the case. You may have an issue with a thermostat or the fan clutch.

 

im sorry, but is this a serious question? simple: let it cool 100% down, drain it using the drain plug in the lower right hand corner, remove hoses, 4 12mm bolts(i think thats the size), and out it comes.


just playing i didnt know how to do it for years, lol just yankin yur chain a little bit

 

Anyone done an electric fan conversion?

 

Don't drink the coolant.

Other than those serious answer, the only thing is make sure you dont' have any buble in the system. that can cause over heat as well.
You can fill up with coolant mix a little stronger then run the engine with the cap open watch for bubble and add more water as necessary.

 

Yep. And I would recommend NOT doing one to anyone that asks. Basically, even with a premium battery, IMO, the stock alternator is not up to the task of keeping up with the fan...ESPECIALLY if you are running the other typical mods... (lights, stereo, winch, OBA, margarita blender, etc.)

 

make sure you get the right one, one is taller than the other. meaning your hood will not close.
