I shift from 1st @ 20mph. I never take 2nd past 36mph, and 3rd I never take past 55mph and 4th never past 70mph, but usually more around 65mph I shift into 5th for highway cruising.

1987 22R cluster. I have NO idea what rpm's im shifting at. I just go by how it feels and what I hear. At the top of each gear (at those mph) something under the truck rattles, probably exhaust so i figure thats high enough, time to shift. hehe
wow thats like exactly what i do haha exept 2nd is 33 for me haha

OK, I cheated, I have over 300,000 but its a rebuilt engine, all to stock spec, plastic guides and all. No tach here, (waiting for funding on a SR5 cluster...) but I shift when she tells me its time to shift... I'm usually in third by the far side of a long intersection. I'll pull hills in third at around 45-50 if they're long enough, but I drive like an old fart...I'm usually in no hurry and she'll run longer that way. It's a little 4x4 four-cylinder truck, not a Porsche. I do get a funny whining, ringing, rattle on a higher RPM downshift, but I think that's the exhaust.

I used to not rev it up at all but that makes it really slow. If you're lugging the engine with your foot to the floor, that isn't going to be good mpg. With 31's, I cruise around in 4th most of the time. I don't use 5th until 65 or if there's a tailwind.

You will have to check with local shops.

Ok so my 22r has about 20k miles on it now. So im pretty sure that its plenty broken in. I have touched 5K only twice. and I rarely ever touch anything over 4K. I want to but for some reason im nervous to. I mean i know the motor can handle it....why would they put the redline way over there if I couldn't touch it? idk maybe I should start. Even when I pull hills im not over 4K.

I always shift between 2500 and 3k. I've stock 4.10's and 32x11.50's on my 85 22re. I know its slow but all I've owned is Toyota pickups so I guess I've just gotten used to it.

Going up the sexton summit i was cruising 60 in 3rd gear around 5k.
Takes it like a champ!
the 22r(e)'s like to be high in rpms

My truck is stock gears and tires.

If im in no rush and no one is behind me, I will shift anywhere from 1800-2000. I will also skip 4th.

In traffic, only not to piss anyone off, I run it to 3000-3500.

Once in a while I will run it to 4500 just to blow it out and to check it for any kind of carbon knock etc.

Flat ground its actually difficult to push it much past 4500 with out dragging it out. The engine drops off a good bit after 4500.

Wow. Driving habits vary big time with our rigs. I'm in 4th gear at 32 mph. Don't know how I do it, but every time I shift to 4th I check my gps and I'm at 32. I usually shift around 2200 rpm. Sometimes 2000. Every once in a while I'll leave her in 2nd and go up to 50.. cuz the speed limit is only 45... I'm also baby-ing my tired clutch, and broken U joint.

I usually shift around 3K unless I'm going uphill. Depending on the grade I'll shift around 3500-4000 or just leave it at 3000-4000 till I'm at the top. I'm rolling on 33's with 4.30's so it's not like I'm going anywhere very fast anyways. I usually average about 18 MPG.
