Truck will pull second gear all day long at these grades but if I shift to third it won't hack it unless I'm over 50mph and then it's marginal.
i got the same problems on the steep grades going to my house

Rev limiter kicks in at 6250ish.. dont hit it often...

Revving above 5K is usually not needed as the power falls off. I will run it steady at 5K on long hills thou without any issues, i've even put it in 3rd at 4750 on cruise for hours (strong headwind, would hold 4th)....

Normally i shift between 25 and 35, accelerating hard gets you there no quicker in a 22RE powered rig... so why push it... the engine can take it, but all it does is suck fuel... I get 18-21mpg with 35's....

On a flat surface, I dump the clutch at 1000 and shift at 2250-2500 RPM's. IMHO, anything over 3k between shifts is a waste of gas and unnecessary wear on a 2wd equipt 22re.

I have a 2WD and just put 4.10 gears in it about a month ago. just driving around I try to keep it between 2000RPM and 3000RPM. If I want to get more pull I'll usually shift around 4000RPM. For maximum acceleration 4800RPM seems to be about the best, But I push it over 5000RPM several times a week and occasionally over 6000RPM.

Can you guys really go up to 20mph in first? I top out at like 10mph which brings me to about 4000 rpm. I hardly use first because i can't use it above 5mph, i just start in second. Thought these rigs just had a very low 1st gear.

25 mph max in 1st here, no idea RPM but at 25mph first feels like the trucks gonna implode, or explode, or somehow do both :-p so shift around 17-20mph.

Maybe you are running different gearing/tire size?

Stock 4.10's a 5spd stock tranny and 31" tires here.

=/

*Starting in second is possible in my rig but it sure as hell doesn't like to. Same with our '87 2wd 22R 4-speed. First goes to around 25mph in that a little more comfy than my 4x4.

What gears/tires are you running? 1st is good for 15mph at 3K, and 25 at 4500... even 5.71's and 30's isnt 10mph at 4000rpm.... AFIK first has always been around 3.93....

Maybe his speedometer is off? But even still, starting in second is more a PITA than starting in 1st and just shifting 1.698 seconds later =P

I'm pretty modest with the shifts. I'd say 3500-4000 usually. It just seems to make more noise above 4000.

Well I have a stnd cab pu so it didnt come with a tach but there is a aftermarket one installed its pretty accurate, I'm in high school still and i get a kick out of going fast and reving high, but yes it kills youre gas milage, I was going for it in the desert and i hit 5800 rpms a few times, I have no idea where the rev limiter is so I try not to go over that and I rev it hard just reguarly driving, havent had any knocking or head gasket problems so I guess its all good, most of the reason for reving so high is because im on 31s with 4.10 diffs so you really got to pedal it to go, I say go for it unless you want to save some gas, I get about 15mpg when im going for it.

33's on 4.10's .. What truck, what motor?

Could 33's on 4.10's throw the speedometer off that much? Just 31's throw mine off about 2-3mph at least.

33's and 4.10, on a 3.93 first would be 37 at redline, 6250, and 23 at 4K.. the speedo would read lower than that thou.. how much depends on OEM tire size...

You know, I never quite figured out why, but my speedo is always 5mph over. Know that for a fact, cause you know those little laser speed readouts that police put on the side of the road? Well I always compare when I pass those. When the laser thing reads 40, my speedo reads 45. When the laser thing reads 80, my speedo reads 85. And on and on and on...

But thats 4.88s and 33s

Tires and gears create a percentage differnce, so the amount its off will vary by speed. If you are always the same off there is something else causing that...
