How does the PCV come out on the 22RE

I've been fooling with this thing. i bought a new one since I don't know when it was last changed....if ever. I was pulling on it, but it wouldn't come out. Then I pushed on it and it went down. Now I'm wondering if it comes out through the valve cover or if you have to take the cover off and pull it from below? I have no idea....

just pull it out, the rubber that is around it gets hard and makes it hard to pull out, but you dont need to pull the valve cover. Sometimes a flat screwdriver helps, but be prepared b/c sometimes that rubber is brittle and breaks.

The rubber already broke...I still can't get it out, I've been using pliers and a screwdriver......

keep trying....it comes out of the top. As a matter of a fact, I'm pretty sure that you cant even see the pcv valve from under the v/c due to a baffle.

I had to use a wide claw, crow bar, using a board on the vavle cover so as not to puncture or crack it. It fianlly came out. Make sure you get a new grommet. You can catch the inside part of the grommet if you are careful with a bent wire, and needle nose.

Theres no way to get it from underneath. it comes out eventually. wiggling is usually helpful in combination with leverage.

Yeah those things require an engine hoist at times for removal. Keep working at it and don't worry about it dropping into the valve cover, there is a baffle underneath the hole. A new grommet from the help! section at Advance makes life easier.

Tried again, still haven't got the damned thing out.....I used a crowbar and a claw hammer, screwdrivers. i think damaged the grommet, so I'll need to get a new one. But now I've got another problem. I have to bleed my clutch again....At least it's not leaking, but I can't drive it till I get some help to fix it.

I had to break that freaking rubber grommet to get mine out. They only cost a couple bucks at Autozone, or wherever. A real pain.

You can't put a new PCV valve in with a hardened grommet even if you do manage to get the old one out without cracking it. It is supposed to be soft, if not, it will not work nad it will leak air.

right on top of the valce cover, big rubber hose goes from it to the intake plenum. There are two large hoses, the PCV is the one towards the back.

If you search long enough (probably buried) you'll find my thread when I had this issue a couple of years ago. I actually got it solved by a few spritzes of WD40. The valve came out pretty easily, not overly so but enough to make me mad at myself for how much aggravation I went through before I decided to lube it up a bit.

EDIT:
Forgot to mention that the PCV was Toyota OEM and judging from what I've seen on certain parts of the truck I'm pretty sure it was the original PCV.

I used a flat pry bar on mine, block of wood under it for leverage then slipped the notch of the bar under the bend in the PCV and it popped right up.

After removing the valve cover, I still had difficulty removing the PCV. I had to chip away at the rock hard grommet and then pick out all the remains with a pair of needle nose pliers.

I never got it out on my own, but it turned out that it was the grommet that was causing all the problems. But, now that and a few other things are fixed and all is well.

the older engines used bolts to hold the baffle on under the valve cover, but the later ones were riveted, so no dice on getting the chunks out...
