I bought this 1991 Xtra cab pickup with 266,000 miles on it. No cat, flowmaster 40 muffler, stock manifold. Apparently the head had been worked on but not the block. However, the block and the transmission are painted blue which makes me believe that possibly the motor was pulled and worked on by a previous owner. She burns oil on steep compression braking, and has some really loud lifter ticks, but still goes strong! To me, its one of the deepest sounding 22RE's I have heard, and the idle seems slightly different. Does anyone think that maybe there could be a cam or maybe even a slight bore on the block judging from the sound? Or am I just hearing things and getting carried away. Should I be worried about all the valve noise?
Flowmaster 40 sounds nice on these. To my ears, the cam sounds stock. Next time you have the valve cover off, get a dial indicator and measure the travel of the valve as you rotate the engine to determine valve lift. Compare to stock specs.
